I am imagining that now the support for compressed formats in general is included - adding support for another decoder .. especially one like OGG, will be a lot simpler for a point revision.

Live has endeared itself to a great many people as a DJ tool. MP3 support bolsters their commitment to this field. I don't think this is going to take anything away from their commitment to the audio production / pro audio arena. In fact, most of the new features listed are more pro-audio oriented.

Well you better put me down as a lame user and proud of it then, because this feature alone would have persuaded me to buy the upgrade.

Ableton obviously realise that us lame users are also their customers

I just don't get why ADDING features without removing others should put users off ?!?

By the way, the mp3 "option" for ProTools costs "just" 16.95€.

logic has had mp3 import/export since v6, cubase has had it for a while i think, sx2?

lol... Just like it put ALL those professionals off who bought Pro Tools, Nuendo, Logic, and EVERY OTHER MAJOR DAW ON THE MARKET.

I dunno, but am I the only one who often gets a set of wave sounds and loops when remixing, combined with a mp3 of the original? When I want to compare what I´m doing with the original that meant using a second computer or closing live, then opening winamp. I think it´ll be convenient from time to time.

All this anti MP3 sentiment is a bit elitist - remember casette?? Well I did my first remix about age ten with a double casette recorder when I was a little fat breakdancer who shook the house with my caterpillar.

Sure, now I wouldnt do a whole track at casette quality, but if I ever found that tape I would be absolutely over the moon because I'd get some decent eqs in and rip out the obnoxious frequencies and I'm CERTAIN I would be able to extract something usable from it. And how cool to remix yourself as a 10 yo!

I certainly wouldnt, however, whinge to sanyo for creating such a poor product 20 years ago that didnt do 24bit 96khz 4092 kbps WAV files so that every little sound in my mix is at optimum quality.

I think varietly in sound quality gives a mix depth and texture

sometimes I hate the use of the word "pro" ... particularly in the illogical context of extra functionality putting "pro" users off. If some twat feels violated because Live now supports MP3 because they are such a "pro" they really need to go check their "PhD in DJ'ing", those years in Harvard researching clip warping, reconsider the 2 decades they have spent producing records for world famous acts. ... given that they are such "pros".

uggh. "pros" my arse. Either you are a dreamer having fun, or you're a conceited ass "pro" DJ.

I used to be against the inclusion of MP3 support but I've mellowed on that one since I started Djing again using Live. Much more space many more tracks available to me and if its over 192 and blasting through most club speakers the great unwashed should be none the wiser. I might use some real shitty Mp3 samples for contrast as an effect, imagine breaking down to 48kps and kicking back in all clean and mighty

properly originally mastered tracks can sound just fine at 192k. but something flat and undynamic in its wav form will likely sound even worse.

I welcome mp3 hugely. now a vast 140 gig of everything i have on CD (and other sources) can be experimented with.

If I really like something; then I hope I can chose to replace the clip with its wav version if I want to. (will the replace function work between mp3->wav and keep warps intact?)

However, maybe the 192k+ version will be just fine anyway.

It is only going to make things easier, and Live even more fun than it already was.

I'm not exactly a fan of MP3s, but if the option doesn't affect the performance of Live, I don't mind the feature. It's not like I have to use it...

mp3 would be usefull for compressing and packing up a live project 2 send over the net - i work alot with ppl around the world it would be a usefull thing i am sure..

i wonder if u can specifiy if a new clip is to be recorded as a wav or mp3? using mp3 loops as part of a project would be cool - and i think for alot of the time indistinguishable from wav if recorded at high rez... anyway ppl have been using 'lo fi' sounds for as long as i can remember..

its nice to see live focus again more on the audio side of things - the midi is very good to have and amazingly usefull - but for me what live's most distinctive characteristic is its handling and manulipulation of audio
