who's "pro"?

just wondering.
there are a couple of threads where the word "pro" has been mentioned lately (not always with good taste...).
so my question is: how many people here consider themselves as "pro"?
what that means, i'll leave it up to you.

Well you didnt leave an option for peeps like me, which prob constitute a large percentage of people on this board -

I have a day job to support my music - I tried other ways but this is the only way right now, as for almost all other producers successful or not (here in London anyway) unless they have rich parents ... this way I can make what I feel not what people think might sell. And its starting to pay off in terms of plays signings and label interest. I used to look down on people who had day jobs - but I now think its the best way for me to be.

Yes, I do consider myself "pro" although its not my living - its certainly NOT a "hobby" (I hate that word anyway...)

I am a proud hobbiest!!!!!!

hobby hobby hobby, yeah yeah yeah...

the great thing about music being a hobby is that you don't have any responsibility to anyone about what music you make and you are compleetly free to stop working at any point because you don't have any dedlines and no one will complain if you don't 'devliver'... oh how wonderful.

but, it's not all good. currently i have no excuse to spend 500 quid on nice korg mono/poly i saw for sale... if i was a 'pro' i could have used the excuse that i needed it for work and that would be cool.

I used to be 'Pro' (IE I earnt my wages doing records and gigs) now I'm 'Hobby' , it was a decision I made based on the amount of fun I was having. It got to be less and less fun carrying flightcases down fire-escapes and arguing with people in anonymous hotels across Europe. I found things got a bit pressured from the people I worked with due to the usual band/management/record company bust ups.
I have plenty of fun now I can actually go to all the parties I used to miss as I packed down our ton of gear. This was in the days when an electronic setup didnt go in a backpack

Music = Hobby
Sound = Pro

Pro = getting paid.

Semi-pro = you get paid sometimes

everything else falls under the hobby category, in my book.

I support myself by leeching on the Danish Socialist Republic's education system. Works pretty well. Takes up a lot of time!

I am a professional, and I work 157 hours a week non stop!! therfore I am better at writing music than all of you... I DO NOT! repeat DO NOT live in my parents Attic surrounded by smelly pants and socks and crusty toilet paper. I'm glad we got that all sorted!!!!!

Hey, you stole my post! ...Except for that "Europe" bit.

That was exactly my story. I was making $350 a gig for a while, and it just got to be such a pain in the ass that even that wasn't worth it. So, I got a very respectable "day job". I work in middle management in a highly specialized field during the day and fiddle with music in the evenings.

That's life. Now I have a stable life, with retirement savings, health insurance, full dental and other benefits... It would be "boring" but I actually love my job. If I had to choose between my real job and music I would drop music like a wet poo in the toilet.

I have really slowed down on music making recently, because I saw how much blood sweat and tears it took just to "make it" last year on Laptopalooza. Rahlo is the hardest working guy I have ever met in the music biz. He deserves every penny he gets - but I am NOT prepared to live his lifestyle. It would turn something I enjoy into something I would loathe.
