I have a boxed version of Suite 8, which after installing upgraded to 8.2.1.
I'm trying to install the Essential Instrument Collection 2 but this apparently straightforward task isn't going at all well. Most of the time, when I drag an alp into Ableton to add it to the library, Ableton just hangs. For example I currently have a dialog box that says, "preparing GrandPiano.alp for installation - 0%" but the top of the dialog box says Live (not responding). It's been sitting like that for 10 minutes. No other programs running.
Ha! Just as I was typing that the dialog box changed & it is now installing. Any ideas why it has to think for 10 minutes before proceeding with installing these elements? Fresh install on new laptop running Win7 Home Premium (64bit), Core i5, 100GB free space, 3GB RAM. This looks like it is going to take all afternoon; especially is this Grand Piano install keeps stopping & starting. One again it has stopped at 77% complete (10/13). Been that way for 5 minutes. Laptop is new & in good health otherwise with no other read/write issues with the optical drive.
Some elements install fine & straight away, some present problems that require me to force-close Ableton, restart & try again. I'm now 2 hours into a job I thought would take minutes.

I have a similar problem when Live is thinking about something - the window will state "Not Responding" but after it's finished thinking it all comes back to life. For me, this usually happens when I'm loading up a pretty big set.
In terms of the EIC, you've got to remember it's not a job that's going to take a few minutes - when you're installing the instruments you're copying gigabytes of samples from the EIC disk which will take a while no matter how shiny and new your system is (I'm slightly envious, my laptop is slooooooooow
). The grand piano especially, is multi-sampled at all sorts of velocities to try to make it as close to a real piano as possible, and as such it's a pretty beefy install. When Live is "Not responding", chances are it's just busy copying all the stuff back and forth. Sucks that it's not updating the progress bar for you though...
I guess the best advice I can give you is to try installing each instrument as you need it, instead of having one massive installation session. At least that way you can break it into bite size steps. For instance, I make quite heavy music so it took me a while to get round to bothering installing the harpsichord.

Thanks for your prompt & reassuring reply, Cezband. I finally got them all loaded up & am onto the Session Drums install now, which is thankfully going much more as I'd expect it to.
With some instruments it took even longer than 10 minutes for the package to be recognised & for me to be able to click OK to begin installing them. I'm sure it's not supposed to be that way. It was as though my optical drive was struggling to read the disc but at least it got there eventually.

it may be worth checking to see if there is any antivirus / firewall type stuff going on.
Sometimes these strange pauses in activity on Windows based machines are due to the OS sat waiting for some user OK on a rights request. Not always the case, but sometimes.
For any antivirus/firewalls you have, tell them that Ableton.exe and any other related processes are OK.
