Basic Automation Question
Ok, all I want to do is record some automation using an external midi controller. I was under the impression that if global record is on then if you hit play in the arrangement view that any manipulations you did would be recorded. This doesn't seem to be the case, as the ableton book I have claims you must also engage recording on the specific track you want to manipulate. I would do this, but when I hit play it overwrites the track with silence. Is there some special input type that I have to choose to record automation?
Re: Basic Automation Question
I think you just set monitoring to off. don't have Live with me to check. I was just doing this but it just happened, forget the steps.

Gave that a try, still replaces the clips with silence if the global record button is activated. If it's not and just the arrangement record button is active, then it just plays it and records nothing.
Re: Basic Automation Question
Have you tried the Overdub button?

Re: Basic Automation Question
I have, I believe that only applies to midi clips though. It still starts recording a new audio clip that overwrites the previous one with overdub off. My main task I'm trying to do is control an audio clips transposition envelope with an external midi controller. Everything is mapped and good, how does one do this?
