Only 2 USB on my laptop

Post by Blackeel » Wed Feb 09, 2011 8:24 am

Hi !

I have a Dell with only 2 USB.
For the moment one is for my mouse, one is for my soundcard (audiobox)

Im planning to buy an APC 40 and a keyboard (M-audio keyrig 49 or LPK25)
The two products have connection with USB. Im also looking forward (I dont know if one day I have a maschine or something else)

How I can do? Hub USB? but I read that it create latency...
I was thinking put the keyboard on my soundcard but there is not midi in midi out on the type of keyboards. Sould I take an other keyboard?

Thanks for your answers.

Use a hub, but make sure it's got it's own power supply. I've heard stories of devices losing power when plugged into a hub which takes it's power from the laptop itself.

Soundcloud (solo stuff) | One Gear Go (my band)

+1 for powered hub.

@ Element you didnt pay for extra USB you paid for the privilege to advertise for Apple when you open the lid in public. get it straight!

Yes, a hub can be very useful, and if you're stuck with two ports, go for it. But hubs can give you a bit of grief, too,
depending on the type of device you're connecting. I find that I often have to plug in my controllers individually in order
to make them register properly. This is particularly a problem with my Novation controllers (Launchpad and Nocturn).

I'm currently looking for a new laptop, and it's really frustrating that it's so hard to find one with four ports which also
satisfies all my other requirements.

I also feel the crunch of too few USB ports. I even have the 17" MacBook with 3 ports. Another issue i run into is not having enough power to run all my USB controllers at once. I have considered a powered USB hub, but might wait to buy this...

The powered hub built into the Interface is brilliant. I also like that it has more ins than my current Interface. The effect sends are also an awesome feature.

If it's a Macbook why do you need a mouse? It's got a great trackpad. There's one port free already! :)

Heads up - this subject has come up a few times on here. I would advise doing a search as even some powered hubs don't work so well. There is a thread w/ a bunch of recommendations if you hunt for it (it was a Belkin 7 port, not sure which model).

Yes i think the trackpad is more useful than a mouse, but I mean for USB midi controllers / hard drives / Audio Interfaces / iPods...
They could've chucked in another two on the opposite side.
They just want us to pay up for more gear on the apple store

No news on release date or price yet. It's a new item they were showing off at Namm for the first time.
