About mixing and mastering

I now a little bit how ableton works i watched all kind tutorials, about the programs and the effect. But what i wanted to now is are there tutorials, how you can make a professional mixing and mastering. I have the book ableton live8 power, it's a good book that explain the program, also how the effect works. But i didn't find a turorial on how to make a smooth mix, and get a professional mix. I have looked at turorials from groove3 and searched on the internet, but not about mixing and mastering with ableton live.

I wouldnt worry too much about being Live specific, the principals of mixing apply regardless of which DAW you are using. It is best to read books on mixing and then practice until you start tp understand the principals and can hear the effects of what you do with EQ and compression and automating your mix parameters.

Mastering is whole different kettle of fish that in essence is best left to someone else, if anything just got get a fresh perspective on the music.

If the mix is good, then really there isn't much more the mastering process needs to do than boost the volume to an acceptable commercial level, or not, thats up to you.

Get your mixing down, that's the key.

And forget using a spectrum analyzer for this, many great sounding tracks don't LOOK the same at all. Focus on what you hear, only use an analyzer to help spot a particular problem if you must.

Yet, it can help a bit, if you have bad reflections in your work space. You shold then also have a good pair of headphones, as a second view. Sometimes its better to do a second check on headphones, then your home hifi or car hifi. Because there can be bad reflections there aswell. In headphones theres no reflections coloring the sound. In my home studio, if I move 3 meters Back from my seat, the bass get pitced up one whole note! I also get -3db from 80hz and down. I found out this while checking my mixes in others studios.

Sound profing your room is the most importent aspect of geting a good mix.
