I just don't (and never did) get the whole Radiohead thing. What is it about these guys that people dig. I find their stuff obtuse and unapproachable. I'd almost rather listen to Depeche Mode if I ever felt like being bummed out to no end....which I don't.

Radiohead is like Scoth-- its bitter and burns but then again its not meant for everyone.

Having said that-
They are musicians in the true sense of the word and their last effort in my mind was the most universally acceptable album they have ever made. - if you find that to be slightly obtuse then its just not your thing.

See the thing with the Radiohead followers is that for them every music they come out with has that characteristic melancholy quality and off late for their past 4 records they have succesfully corss experiemented with various genres of music to come up with something eclectic -- case in point -- the title track named KID A.

But no hate at all on you man-- depeche mode is brilliant as well.

It kind of sneaks up on you when you least expect it. Give it a chance and it will reward you with much listening pleasure.

But then most of the music I like most is stuff I didn't like on first hearing.

I think you're right. I actually bought Kid A and just found it unlistenable. I'll have to give them another shot perhaps. I'm not really into the melancholy thing. I like the toe-tapping shit myself.

I'm just doing something and then the album is over, nothing made me go "whoa, put that track on repeat."

Radiohead gets an enormous amount of 'ORIGINAL!' and 'INNOVATOR!' labels attached to them, but I've always been like 'meh' - especially when compared to the two bands you've mentioned.

I mean...Les Claypool vs Thom Yorke? For me there's really no contest as to who's more interesting musically. Not that it has to be a contest or anything, but...

I'll listen to anything Claypool has to offer because I know I'm going to be ASSAULTED on all fronts - in a good way. I can barely listen to Radiohead because it quickly becomes quite plodding and eventually just insufferably self-important.

But I've always dug Jonny Greenwood's playing and FX work. That's gotta get mentioned.
