warping?

Post by kjacobs » Wed Feb 16, 2011 4:46 pm

New at this, recording myself on guitar, trying to follow the beats on a simple drum pattern. I find it very difficult to get the rythm dead nuts with the drums, so that it sounds just off, especially if I start cutting and pasting. Tried to follow about warping but not gettin it yet. Can I warp audio clips that I record in a live session and get them to fit time wise, or is it only possible with samples from outside live. Is that what warping does?
Right now I try to determine the exact tempo I play a song at, then putting a drum pattern together at that bpm, then trying to play with it. Like I said close, but you can tell a lot is just off. So now I play on one track for a while then try to copy and paste out of a 1/32 grid (for best detail alignment) picking one measue or more with the exact beats as the midi, although off on synch. Then I make a copy of that to another audio track and align first beats. Problem is when I do that the original track starts drawing a red line and changing the clip(s) in the first audio.
It would be nice if I could play the whole song, or at least larger sections at one time and get it to synch to drums. I have always had a problem holding a steady tempo. I have tempoed many live recordings of bands with drummer and against a metronome, their timing moves around also, so I know I am not alone.
Any advice on synching to drums?
