unlocking confusion

Post by taximouse » Sat Jun 04, 2005 1:53 am

My logic board just failed on my 3 month old Apple PowerBook. The computer is being repaired, but I was told by Apple Support that I'll have to re-install all my applications.

Here are my questions:
1) I'm assuming I'll have to use my #2 unlock to reinstall Ableton Live on
my PowerBook. I upgraded to Live4 from Live3. Do I have to reinstall both
applications? I backed-up my PowerBook, is there a file somewhere I can salvage to avoid a second unlock on the same machine?

2) Will I need an unlock code for both Live3 and Live4? I originally installed Live3 on my desktop G4 (running OS9) just a month
before switching to a PowerBook, so I've already unlocked Live3 twice.

3) My logic board failed at the worst time (is there ever a good time?). I'm in the middle of mixing a record and am working under a deadline. More than half of it was created in Live4. Until I get my PowerBook back (in 10 days they say) I need to work. I'll have to use Live4 on my iBook (slower but at least it has the same OS as my PowerBook). Obviously, to do this I will need to install Live4, but, here's my question, then will I blow all my "unlocks"?

I'm very confused about what to do...and pissed off I have to say. A logic board failure is bad enough to work around without having to deal with Ableton's piracy protection hurdles.

Ok. I just trolled through the forums and while there are plenty of posts about unlock confusion, I could find no posts about being refused more unlocks. So that's good. It sounds like although the copy protection is more severe than I'm used to, at least Ableton is understanding.

So, since I want to get back to work and not spend any more time on this, I'll go ahead and try to install on my iBook. I'll just assume that I'll get another unlock from Ableton in time to reinstall on my powerbook when it gets back from the repair center.

Phew! I would be relieved to hear a positive story from any users who've had similar experiences...just to put my mind at rest.

Thanks very much
