Mac users: For live show OSX or 9?

Post by claudek » Thu Feb 27, 2003 5:17 pm

I am planning a live set and wondered what would be most stable
OSX or OS9 of 2.02? Any experiences?

My short answer is that OS X is better for me.

OS X has protected memory, which is great because should your program crash, you can quick click over to iTunes and play some noises to keep people distracted until live reboots and you can continue your set proper.

Unfortunately Live 2 seems to use more resources on OS X (I guess dealing with Core Audio is more of a processor hog). Also your VST plugin choices are limited in the X environment. However, the native Live plugs are very good, and those plus the OS X plugs by MDA (freeware plugins!) have been good enough for me to do my live sets in X. Also, Pluggo is supposedly under development for OS X.

The pluses of 9 are just the inverse... lots of VST plugs and faster processing with Live.

But honestly, the stability of the overall OS wins for me, so that's why I use X for live sets now.

I should also say that since upgrading to 2.02 I haven't had Live crash on me (yet).

Both have been stable for me, but I feel safer in OS X, knowing that a crash won't take the whole machine down & require a reboot.
However the performance with my audio interface is so bad in X that I have to use 9 right now.

OS X (10.2.3)
very stable....
the itunes tip is good...even create mp3's of tracks (left chann-mono mix of your track, right chann- click track) to use as a replacement track until live reboots.

Will be using live on tour soon and will report back with anything interesting

I was thinking X

I have been using OSX 2.02 and a M-Audio "Oxygen 8" and works great.
I have not had any problems yet so far and feel OSX is solid and very
stable OS....So X it is...I also think once you start adding 3rd party VST Fx there may be a larger chance of crashes..Seems the built in FX are very strong and made perfect for use with Live..

without a doubt OSX. os what kind of audio interface are you using. Oxygen is a good choice for control. They also got two others. One with 16 knob controllers and another with 8 knobs and 8 faders. Can be very handy if you take control of Logics environment and Abletons midi mapping capability. :)

Metric Halo Mobile I/O. It's a great box. Apparently some improved OS X drivers are on the horizon.

I am using the Mac

Funny I am using the Mac asio and a cheap Edirol usb audio out that give me 2 rca outs and 2 ins..Works fine for a funky live show..Sound is not bad..16 bit.It beats lugging my Motu 828 Firewire interface around and having it stolen or broken..The trade off aint worth it in my opinion.

Yeah, I guess we just have to be patient, with all this switch over stuff(OS9-OSX). My basic setup at home is: Oxygen 8, M-audio Quattro, and an imac g3. When I first switched over to 10.1 there wer e some issues. Now there have been some updates and I think Im at 10.4 now. These updates definetely did something good. However one of the studios that I go to has all the shit. Control 24, midi av, 2 cinema screens w/G4, Roland V synth and V drums a few other keyboards, and alot more, but no luck with OSX. They are up to 10.2 have all drivers, but Im still having a hard time just to get sound out of anything but internal spkrs. I got to frustrated, had to leave. But, if I were to go back and try again, I would:
make sure you are updated to 10.4
get all the drivers install audio drivers first
setup audio setup
maybe use itunes to check for sound if yes
install midi drivers connct them in midi setup open your audio prgm(PT,logic,sx) and change the prefs to your new setup. If still no luck, dont give up! :)

Post by claudek » Sat Mar 01, 2003 11:58 pm

You should update to 10.2.3 at least ...Things are really much better.. different speed, smooth and overall just nice..getting almost as snappy as OS9..but with the stability of X..
