Gentlemen,
I give you the greatest mashup ever made of 2 different songs by the same band and how they align perfectly in style, key, form, and pattern. Each song is panned hard left and right for your listening pleasure.

Coldplay were influenced by The Bends. That's about the extent of it. Like every other band or artist, you either like it or you don't. If you don't enjoy OK Computer or Kid A, I'm not going to try to make you.LoopStationZebra wrote:If you put Coldplay on the stereo on one side of the room....and Radiohead on another stereo at the opposite end...and then put me in the middle...I'm quite certain my head would explode. Aren't they sorta the same band?
For me, OK Computer kind of capped an era (along with Bjork, DJ Shadow, Aphex Twin and many, many others) that upped the ante, raising the level of what could be expected from "popular" music and hinted at all the underground music scenes going on. Also, If you see Radiohead live it's a way earthier vibe. It's not an elitist or pretentious thing at all, they just rock. If someone started a thread that said "The Beatles are awesome!", people would post stuff like, "I never really got The Beatles, aren't they really just the same as the Monkees?" That's the nature of the internet, a variety of opinions.
Some of the hype is because people want to pretend they represent something more than a band. When Ok Computer came out, they would often name drop Naomi Klein's book No Logo and the discussion surrounding the record coincided with the mainstreaming of words like "globalization" and "consumerism". A lot was made back then of human/technology tension (Y2K anyone?). Since then we've kind of glazed over those issues because the "information age" has had so many lifestyle benefits to the consumer. At the time, Ok Computer was a kind of heart on sleeve thing. A cultural signifier, if I'm using that term correctly. Not on it's own but as a mascot for what was going on at the time. So there's that.
One of the reasons In Rainbows was interesting was because it rejected all that seriousness for a more emotional and earthy vibe. It even had a love song on it. I respect the hell out of Radiohead and I'm always excited to hear their new music. You either like it or you don't, no big deal. Melancholy or not, music makes people happy and Saturday morning I'll be one happy camper.

Just heard a rumour that these guys made the latest album with Ableton Live from a good source. Kinda 'sounds' plausable. Whatever, really into it.
