Program a BPM change assigned to a midi button/key

Post by tysonification » Tue Mar 01, 2011 2:35 pm

Hey, I'm relatively new with Ableton and my Novation controller, but I've already integrated it into my band's set. I'm wondering if there's an easy way to program a set BPM change to one of the npc pads or a key on my controller?

I use the controller for a few VSTi's live (rhodes, pads etc) and I want to have precise changes in the BPM's so the delays trail according to the song being played without having to dial them in imprecisely with a knob... I don't usually have easy access to the computer itself on stage.

Any suggestions?
Much appreciated!

hi, not sure if this will help but you can name scenes in session view with a bpm, then when you launch that scene, the global bpm changes to that number. for example, naming a scene "123bpm" then launching that scene with your midi controller, will change the global bpm to 123. if you leave the scenes empty, they will still launch, thus achieving your result. if you have clips in the scenes, they will play at the new bpm. there might be other ways to do it, but that's just off the top of my head. hope it helps....

thanks for the welcome!

Unfortunately, I'm looking to control live instruments from Kontakt and want to be able to instantly change the bpms to a preset number so the delays etc are consistent with the song being performed..

Also, I know this is really naive of me, but what is the difference between a scene and a clip? Is a scene the whole horizontal line of clips in session view?

Assign a key or button on your Novation to TAP TEMPO (top left of the screen next to the BPM display. I have this set up on my Remote61.

I use the X-Y pad for (Y) amount of send to the DDL, and (X) DDL feedback amount. I have my feedback "normalised" at about 40%, but pushing the X axis forward puts it up to 99% - almost infinte - good for super-extended dub flicks. When I release the X axis it drops back to 40%.

The scene thing should work for you.

Yes the scene is the whole horizontal line of clips.

Are you using prerecorded clips?

Either way it will work...

You might need to remove some stop buttons if you use some prerecorded clip

I am using a pre-recorded clip in song view because I have other tracks engaging at different times throughout the pre-recorded clip playing. For some reason I can't do it in session view the way I want to, all the clips just play at the same time.

The problem with just assigning a knob to the bpm is I have to set it, which I can't do accurately in time. I need a quick switch from one bpm to another pre-set number, is what I'm saying.

Appreciate the help, guys.

try this...
keep everything as you have it in arangement...

then in session view name scene with the bpm u want "123bpm"

then delete all the stop buttons so that when launch the scene it doesnt stop what u have playing in arrangement...

the stop clips are the round points in the empty clip slot, you can delete them by right clicking them...

try that out...
