Using EQ
Hi,
Wonder when I should be looking to use EQ in mastering our bands recorded performance.
Add to Master or clips or both?
Which ableton EQ effect should I be using, or do i just add the main effect and customise.
We have drum, bass, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, vocals
Thanks

Re: Using EQ
1. EQing to clips is mixing
2. EQing the master channel is premastering
3. You should use EQ when you think that it is needed, you shouldn't when you don't

Not sure what this means. Use EQ eight. It is pimp.stpetersrcuk wrote:Which ableton EQ effect should I be using, or do i just add the main effect and customise.

I meant that under EQ Eight there are sub categories.
Do i drag the top level EQ 8, which from waht i see gives me a flat EQ that i can custom edit, or choose one of the categories...
Thats waht i meant, but i guess i just choose what works.
Never used it before so just wondered
Thanks for response

Re: Using EQ
Yup, the sub cats are presets. Don't use em. In fact, delete them. An EQ preset has no idea how your source material sounds so how could it then correct it?

Although, if you're a beginner (as it seems like stpetersrcuk is) presets are useful in terms of providing an example of the different ways a certain tool can be used to colour a sound. But yeah, never put them on without any sort of tweaking.

Re: Using EQ
Why EQ the master at all, why not just go back and adjust the individual tracks as needed?

stpetersrcuk,
I think you need to learn what the difference is between mixing and mastering.
You are mixing my friend. By calling it mastering you are confusing the 'f' out of this forum.

No, mainly I think he's confused on his own; I'd say 75% of the forum are not. I'd also bet that they are not 'confused the fuck' only 'mildly off kilter'.savyurrecords wrote:stpetersrcuk,

Re: Using EQ
I am an EQ-fanatic!
I use EQ8 on every Track!
Of course self constumed.
Use the cut filters in EQ8 to remove Frequencies that do not make the sound what its suppose to be (like removing deep bass frequencies from voice tracks by setting the highcut to 100 Hz or below). I think this is a good point to start with using EQs.
In general I do not really liek the idea of putting EQ on the master channel, but I think most "famous" mastering engineers do that. But maybe this is because they only have complete songs to master and no individual tracks anymore? I do not know!
Heres also some info (dooing google search on "basic EQ usage"):

+1Tarekith wrote:Why EQ the master at all, why not just go back and adjust the individual tracks as needed?
and you could just use EQ eight on each track, it isn't very hard to get the hang of it if you don't know what you're doing.
For example, you'd want to cut out the lower frequencies out of your guitar track so that it wont get muddied with the bass track, although there's a lot more to it than that, i'm just trying to give you some grounds.
But what you should really do is just go ahead and read tarekith's guide to a mixdown and pre-mastering: http://tarekith.com/assets/mixdowns.html
very helpful!
