I don't know the genre... dub/tarncey/trip-hop...
A couple tunes I wrote over the last few days... trying to up my production value... Can't really define the genre, maybe someone can help?

Hey man, wasn't sure quite what to make of Fyrge to be honest...the intro seems a bit long, and when the drums kick in it kind of feels a little weird that nothing else does. I get what you're trying to go for with the wob sounds now and then, it feels like you're trying to make it a bit less predictable than the usual dubstep continuous wobwobwobbing, but I'm not sure how well it fits at the moment. I'd either knock a lot off the top end of it to make it really subtle, or go the opposite way and smash it with bit crushers and things to make it really brutal. The melodic bit that comes in later is much nicer, but it kind of feels like a seperate song. Maybe hint at the melody towards the start, or on the intro, and then when it comes in thicker at the end it should fit more.
I liked Swank quite a bit more. It feels like one of those songs that fits in to the nice open Electro category. That opening synth beep line that continuous throughout the song is a really nice core...later in the song, when you've got more of the lower synths in, it feels like the filters aren't quite fitting right - maybe you could automate or tempo synch the slow lfo to make the beginning and end of the phrase more obvious?
Interesting ideas man, keep it up!

Thanks for the listen! I know what you mean about Fyrge. I tried to hint at it that melody at the beginning and it didn't fit as nicely as I'd like. Maybe I could use the synth I use in the beginning and end to glue it a little better. I might just be done w/ it and move to the next knowing that what I tried there doesn't work as nicely as I'd like (combining dorian and phyrgian modes in the same song).Cezband wrote:Hey man, wasn't sure quite what to make of Fyrge to be honest...the intro seems a bit long, and when the drums kick in it kind of feels a little weird that nothing else does. Ah so it was something of a deliberate attempt to do some odd modal stuff? That makes the strangeness a lot easier to handle

Yeah, it was a deliberate modal experiment. Started in phyrgian and couldn't think of anything to add then out came this dorian line that sounded good, but like you said, a completely different song. What I did like about it was the nasty drop from dorain back to phyrgian.Cezband wrote:Ah so it was something of a deliberate attempt to do some odd modal stuff? genres suckAceLuby wrote:... Can't really define the genre, maybe someone can help?
but really limiting an artist to a genre is limiting him as an artist because all of us have different influences that we put together in our own music and we're all tryin to be unique here instead of just putting out the same old music with specific genre standards
that being said
the first track is not bad i can see where you're going with that one it has some nice parts to it
the second track i like more (Swank) it changes up a good amount which is good
it reminds me of a trip hop song like Massive Attack being mixed with some old school dubstep, i like it man good work

Thanks... actually kinda what my gf said too. She told me it had a weird ambient, dub, hip hop vibe that she hadn't really heard before and didn't know if she liked it. I thought that if she hadn't heard it before at least it's original.jesus god sandal wrote:genres suckAceLuby wrote:... Can't really define the genre, maybe someone can help?
