How to Overdub MIDI without overwriting existing envelopes?

Hi there,

what i wanna do is this:
I have a midi clip with 2 played notes. The Volume is also automated.
Now i want to overdub the midi notes - but ONLY the midi notes and NOT the automation. I dont fin any solution. When i wanna overdub the midi notes, i have to arm the track. But then all automation will be overwritten to. When i only hit the generell record button no midi is recorded. So whats the deal here?
PS.: I am working in the Arrangement View.

try using two midi tracks - one for the note information and one for the automation. that way you don't have to arm the automation track when you want to overdub. route the midi out of both to the same instrument, obviously

Well, I believe this is the only way for this .But someone please explain it to me , WHAT WAS THE DEVELOPERS INTENTION ?

this seems more to be a bug ,which hasn`t been fixed from the first version and it`s so dissapointing .....

Switch to session, and draw the notes in?

Wow, I just tried it and it IS realy dumb.
You can overdub automation without removing the notes by un-arming the track but you can't overdub notes without removing any automation that's already there.

We need a "midi messages filter" as midi effect.

What we need is for the "Lock Envelopes" button to protect them from being overwritten.

I just did a google search about this and came in here.
I had complaints about Live's stupidity with not recording automation into "Clips"
AT ALL...
so I began working in the arrange window instead.
Then I discovered what you're posting about!
I have written music using Live but it is definitely limited (I hit those
'walls' where I'm like..disgusted). It's a looping and DJ app.
First decision: there's no need for frustrations like these when I'm writing.
Live needs work, and they are doing what Logic still does:
they hear the users, but are too proud to do it that way.
There are things in Logic that millions of professionals have been screaming about for literally 15 years.
And to this day, they will still feed you WORKAROUNDS.
Funny: it took Logic 8 years to put stretching into Logic, but their automation
is truly the best out there.
Live is the opposite: best time stretching out there, but they're not
putting the latté down to re-script their automation woes.

Your solution is to minimize the Live window sometimes.
Sound design and composition and Creating the parts I do in Cubase/Reason/Logic.
Mashing those created parts and other cool stuff is what Live does.

Ohhh...the wonderful world of WORKAROUNDS.

Workaround(noun): a coffee break disguised as a solution,
when what's called for is WORK on FIXING the WEAKNESS.

Customer: "when I step on the accelerator pedal the window opens.
Can you please fix it?"
Mechanic: "you could try gluing the window shut, that'll fix it."
