MIDI triggers percussive chords

Post by Solieri » Sat Mar 05, 2011 1:42 pm

Hi everyone. First, thanks to all the great advice from amazing musicians on this board. I've learned so much from you, just from reading other people's posts.

I'm newish to Live, and I'm looking for some advice. I want to set up Live so I can play a rhythm on a MIDI trigger (in my case a Handsonic HPD 10), and Live will use that rhythm with pre-arranged notes or chords. I want to sequence the chord progression of the song earlier, so when jamming or playing live, I can focus on playing percussion and know that the notes will sound good with what the guitar's doing.

I experimented with having the MIDI mapped to the mute for the chords, or having it mapped to the track volume, but that seemed a limited and inelegant approach. I wondered about sidechaining and ducking but that seems to be the opposite from what I want. Now I've been playing with using a vocoder, with the carrier signal as the chords and the percussion as the modulator. This shows promise, but I was wondering if someone with more experience might have an even better solution.

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.
