Beginner's thoughts on 64 bit/32 bit

Apologies if this is too long...just wanted to share my recent experience..

i upgraded my 5 yr old computer to and i7/64 bit computer...for the amount of money i spent, i was concerned about wasting money and feared live wouldn't really take advantage of it
i was kind of obsessed with the 32 bit limits on live, along with my soft synth..

i had sonar 8.5 on my previous rig, and so i also had the builder preinstall sonar x1..gotta use that power!!

well in just a couple weeks, i've played with live for about 20 hrs..not one crash...i loaded 32 bit omnisphere in there, with reason 4...along with an editor for a hard synth and for my guitar amp simulator...no crash...i recorded 4 audio tracks at once with friends...i had 3 buses with delay/reverb/beat repeat on 2 of the track, and compressor on the bass
no crash...i went through tons of loops and added them while we recorded, added some crazy effect racks to mangle the loops......i never saw the meter get about 15%....WOW.....this setup crushed my old system

i would also add that i can't detect any material latency playing the omnisphere synth...no pops or crackles...

i know i'm not the best case for maxing out a system, but i feel like now i can go nuts and try all kinds of stuff i never tried because it killed my system..i wonder what professional folks can do..

i'm not a basher, i've used sonar over many years, i was excited to have that power on my desktop...i even got it Pre-installed professionally...however, it crashes all the time...especially when i run it with omnisphere..in fact, i can feel just a tiny bit of latency where in live i get none..
i understand x1 is newer but jeez...

bottom line...64 bit for live or bust? i'm sure that will be great someday...but i am finding the current live version is better than fine for me as a hobbyist

i hope this helps if you are thinking about Daws/computer purchases in the near future...

Most users wont need 64-bit Live... and most users don't understand what 64-bit really means... they just think that 64-bit must be twice as good!

that's kinda why i made that post..i will take the hit for all of us suckers..

but it's all good... it works really well and that's what is really important

the whole wanting for 64-bit is to make use of RAM on our computers so we can run projects to full potential, how annoying is it when you have a project, say 60 tracks, and ur trying to compress/EQ everything for final mixdown and its running frustrating slow, ur buffer is at max, its crashing etc. People want 64 bit to elevate this and keep the workflow smooth and quick. Why is that a problem with you guys?

No problem with 64bit version, actually i dont need more than 2gbyte of buffer. With Reaper 64bit my workflow isnt faster

Probably the biggest demand for 64 bits comes from folks who want to load very big sample libraries, e.g., string libraries for film scoring. They are simply too big to be held in a 32-bit address space.

not quite so. i work on a notebook and i`ve noticed overall speed improvement 10-20% on 64bit windows. on all applications, not live itself. another thing is a RAM usage improvement.

What was the point of your post, anyway? That Sonar X1 is unstable right now?
What does 64 bit/32 bit have to do with this?

There are some 32 bit programs which are unstable and there are some 64 bit programs which are stable and vice versa.
64 bit is just an evolutionary step. It's nothing magical, it allows us to use the hardware (esp. RAM) to the full potential.
You're looking way too much into this.

I don't know about most users, as I am not in a position where I have concret data enabling me to speak on behalf of most users (whoever those are).

I can however speak for myself, as I have done in this earlier post: http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=150332 where I draw from my own real-life experiences leading me to the conclusion that I have no doubts what so ever that 64-bit would solve issue that I have. In short: 64-bit will push technology out of the way so I stop thinking about memory consumption issues, and increase my focus on the music.

Btw: Currently I'm using jBride as a workaround. It works quite good as a temporary workaround for more memory hungry plug-ins.

Umm...pls note that i aimed my post at beginners..like me

look around and you will see people debating why live doesnt go to 64 bit on many music production forums
why pay extra money to get something in your computer when your DAW has no time frame to upgrade to 64 bit?
This seems to be a very sensible question to someone spending $$ on a music computer..
i read lots of forum posts and i made my decision, and i shared my initial results..

what was your point? that you're a jerk that picks on beginners?

btw I've used sonar for 5 years..i like it...no ulterior motive other than mentioning that i was very excited to have what i viewed as a very powerful 64bit DAW, and so far it's been unstable and disappointing..
