One more problem with this method of recording automation with MIDI sends/receives is that you can't arm an audio track while the MIDI track is armed. In other words, you can't record the audio while the device is generating automation data live. You'd either have to record the automation first and play it back, or modify the sends/receives to bypass the MIDI track recording the automation. Am I missing something here?

Go to lives preferences, record/launch/warp the change the exclusive arm button off, you should be able to arm as many track at once as you like.

even if exclusive arm is ON you can hold ctrl (windows, on mac it's called command key, i think) and then click another arm button to arm multiple tracks..

The OP has stated that he wants to record automation in MIDI clips.
So it's not about the usual track automation in arrangement view.
I think the thread shows some interesting solutions/workarounds.

Guys, I know its not exactly automation recording, but goes into the same direction: Session Snapshots for Ableton Live 1.0 is a Max for Live patch which stores snapshots of all settings in session view plus 16 plugins. Presets are triggered by scenes.
Fully automated presets of track settings, sends, macros, plus VST, AU & Max plugins, all saved in Live's Session view. So it's a nice starting point for any automation.
