Looking for ideas/input on my live setup

Post by neonplague » Tue Mar 08, 2011 6:03 pm

Hi all,

Below I have described the Live setup I am looking to put together, so I am looking for thoughts on this...any issues you can see I might have/suggested improvements or things to watch out for. All ideas/personal experiences would be very useful.

So the "band" will consist of 3 people:
Me - MIDI keyboard/controller/Laptop running Ableton
Vocalist
Violin player

I plan to seperate all my complete tunes into up to 8 tracks (drums, bass, synths etc etc) then build these back up as clips in Session view. To this I will do a few variations of bare drums etc to help the transition from one tune to the next.

When performing live I will mute the keys/vocal/violin tracks form the original, which are replaced by us performing these parts (that way if the violinist isn't there, then it's easy to fix by just playing the recorded version)

I will have a master MIDI keyboard for playing on, plus a MIDI controller for navigating the set, adding effects to certain tracks and allowing for a bit of live remixing on the fly when Im not needed on the keys.

This bit I am not sure about.....Do I bring the microphone signal from the other 2 back in through Ableton Live and mix it all together in the box? This would allow for some effects to be added (these parts are quite effected in my original tracks) but will there be CPU strain/latency issues?

Keeping in time - with the right audio interface I should be able to split the click track to all 3 of us if required. Or I thought that maybe a visual metronome could work, Ive seen somewhere a plugin that shows a large circle divided into 4 segments, which flash brightly in time with the music, the first one is a different colour. Could be an option...?

So that is the basic idea. Does anything stick out as being a bad idea? Also Id be looking for recommendations on the audio interface, plus I assume Id need preamps for the 2 musicians?

Any input much appreciated.

Dan

I guess these long posts are less likely to get answered :)

The main problem is mic bleed, so the vox and sax mics pick up all the other noise and music and then you feed them back to abes and the whole noise floor goes up and is multiplied every time you loop and replay anther vox/sax part...a difficult one to overcome but not impossible I suppose.
