It was true.

You can have one this year if you want!
My main worry about all this Intel business is that they'll start making Apple machines go "Doonk ! Boong Bing Bong Bing!" when they start up. Just like all the annoying PC adverts where they interrupt the advert to tell you it's got Intel Inside. waaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Well. "All the software...."drush wrote:the real question is how long until the MacTels are worth a crap and all the software is ported... not anytime soon
Which crap would you need? Apart from games.
I read somewhere earlier this year that apple has hired developers to port games to mac.
There may be some other sofwtare being ported too. But i can't think of things you can't do on osx. (i do have to admit, my old MAD cd-rom collection only runs on win)

i'm very happy with this 12" 1.33 pbook so yeah, no complaining from me. the religious applite might get a bit funny about all of this tho. like it matters
Well, if you're one of the apparently 75% of Mac developers who are either using XCode or planning to switch to it - not very long after all. Besides, Rosetta lets you run PPC code on Intel without recompiling, apparently without any performance issues (apparently, I'd like to see for myself)drush wrote:the real question is how long until the MacTels are worth a crap and all the software is ported... not anytime soon
yeh can't say i actually understand what the boffins are talking about when they go into detail about the differences between this or that processor... I would however like a G5 laptop with a 23" screen that folds down to the size of a paperback. It would also have an impregnable waterproof bulletproof case - you could bash open a bottle of beer on the edge and use it for opening oysters and there wouldn't be a scratch... If Intel can do that, then welcome aboard...

helooo dual boot on my wintel box.
I dont need the fancy case or anything, just any old PC will run OSX.
I still wonder what happened to AltiVec .. wasnt that meant to be the killer function of the IBM chip. Yet in Jobs's speech it is phrased as if they are simply going to use existing Intel roadmapped chips .. IE pentium D with its cursed DRM. Where did the AltiVec go?

If Apple releases OS X for x86 style architecture then any computer currently running Windows can run OS X
helooo dual boot on my wintel box.

No, it doesn't.Angstrom wrote:you mac users realise what this means though right ?

maybe but i suspect they keep it to specialised Apple hardware. in any case i can't find a laptop as nice as this pbook that's a pc. that's unlikely to change. and if it did change then i'd buy that to run the important thing: macosx.Angstrom wrote:you mac users realise what this means though right ?

Steve Jobs has stated in the past that he wanted OSX to run on standard PC or Windows wachines and wanted to get out of manufacturing. This was a looong time ago so I'd have to hunt for a quote. It was played down for shareholder reasons as it seemed an impossibility at the time.
Right now the Windows marketplace is wide open if they let OSX run on PentiumD without shooting themselves in the foot. What have they to gain by limiting it to a Mac box only ... nothing.
they gain many millions of dollars by letting OSX run on wintel boxes
you dig?
Ok now the fippedy flip side.
I can get myself an Apple powerbook with a dual boot with OSX (or whatever) AND *cough* longhorn on it

"President Phil Schiller addressed the issue of running Windows on Macs, saying there are no plans to sell or support Windows on an Intel-based Mac. "That doesn't preclude someone from running it on a Mac. They probably will," he said. "We won't do anything to preclude that."
However, Schiller said the company does not plan to let people run Mac OS X on other computer makers' hardware. "We will not allow running Mac OS X on anything other than an Apple Mac," he said. "

forgive my reposting of info. just helps to hear what apple is saying.
