What happened to Ableton Live?

actually it was being tested for a long time before it was released, and for me personally it was rock solid until 8.1 and M4L came along.3dot... wrote:last time..

Ableton Live was last seen making sick tracks on a PC with no plugins at my house.
its rumored that 3Phase broke in to Ableton headquarters and ran all the code through his translator which subsequently changed the program from Live to Life. Ableton Life is a very naughty application that falls asleep at the wheel and changes the time on all the clocks. Rather than making music it dreams about the good old days and spends most of its time bitching, boasting or talking about fans, boys and a fetish for things that are brown.
Re: What happened to Ableton Live?
My recollection is it *seemed* pretty good through the later RCs, however the actual RTM version was the one where it went to hell. From then I found it just slowly got better and sometimes worse - even through the 8.1 mess period (I tended to find 8.1 was actually an improvement over pre 8.0.9).abletontrainer.com wrote:actually it was being tested for a long time before it was released, and for me personally it was rock solid until 8.1 and M4L came along.3dot... wrote:last time..

8.0.9 (I think it was that version) was the one version that for a while seemed better. Didnt seem to just die nearly everytime I dragged a plugin in for eg.
I guess it all depends on what features you are using at the time - it was only recently it dawned on me that it all goes to hell whenever Im working on a remix and therefore using complex pro warp mode all the time. There was a short time where for a few tracks I was hardly using any synth plugins at all, just impulses, simplers and samplers and audio clips and I thought it was stable at the time, looking back - it just I wasnt really using its feature enough to provoke it.
Nothing to see here - move along!

You can eventually kill most DAWs doing this.golemus2 wrote:If you are in Win7 32-bit, try this, just load VST-plugin after VST-plugin to Live continue until your live project takes about 1700MB of commit memory and whala!, your Live crashes without you pressing the play button even a single time. Re: What happened to Ableton Live?
yeah this is the difficulty with beta testing - it's all down to how you use it, plus what system you run etc etc... so many variables.. some people have had it rock solid all alongKhazul wrote: I guess it all depends on what features you are using at the time - it was only recently it dawned on me that it all goes to hell whenever Im working on a remix and therefore using complex pro warp mode all the time. I still have problems sometimes with complex pro... clicks and pops when the CPU meter is not peaking - but it's really hard to pin something like that down when it's so random...
Add to that my audio interface is about 8 years old now and I think every now and then it just pops on it's own.... really about time to get a new one!

Re: What happened to Ableton Live?
personally I posted that it wasn't IMO stable enough for release when they announced beta testing was done. In my set up at least 7 was solid, and the 8 final beta wasn't. It seems that things got worse for most of you around the 8.1 MFL release, but I was OK with being dead broke and unable to afford the 8.0 upgrade simply because for me it wasn't as stable as people were reporting. I'm looking forward to 8, just climbing out of the recession bill pile about now though, so I'll probably end up getting it when they announce 9!

For the past few years, I've been very proud to be using Live on stage. People are amazed at what it can do.

Re: What happened to Ableton Live?
Well I did the exactly same thing in Studio One and it did not crash. It reacts so that when you add/duplicate the last instances, nothing happens. OK even that could be better, I think the right thing in this situation would be that the application also tells the user the reason why you cannot add the instrument (not enough memory available), but at least S1 won't crash like Live.Khazul wrote:You can eventually kill most DAWs doing this.golemus2 wrote:If you are in Win7 32-bit, try this, just load VST-plugin after VST-plugin to Live continue until your live project takes about 1700MB of commit memory and whala!, your Live crashes without you pressing the play button even a single time. I cannot even describe how many hours I have wasted because Live crashed when I tried to add a new VST effect or instrument to the project. Especially as the project loading times are huge.
Re: What happened to Ableton Live?
Ableton Live 8 is very stable on my enviroment except for 3rd party plugs (I use a special PC just for music!)
And I also believe they still have some Quality Assurance going on.
So what happened?
Live is old. Every software requires major refactoring or complete redesign after a decade.
Live went through the transformation of a specialiced audio looper to an all purpose DAW.
It does things by now it was not developed for!
Things like code ownership and clear architectural borders come to my mind.
They really need to do the stuff they´re doing right now, and they can´t do it in small increments.
Other software companies have got over this difficult times and so will Ableton.
So yeah this are difficult times and so instead of whining help them with clear bug reports and a good statement of what we (the users) want from the software.
PS: The problems with 3rd party plugins can be solved by firewalling their code in it´s own process, but this requires a very well designed audio engine to implement.
PPS: I use live because it is designed to run on my not so super piece of $hit

sure ..tested a long time but by what kind of people? beta testers that missed to discover a fatal crashbug on certain apple computers when using midi.
thats still a good joke how one can miss on that one and call it totally stable

Nicely put. It's treating me pretty well at the moment. I have it running on a very nice new piece of hardware and it's pretty rock solid. I have a few VSTs loaded and I'm driving it with a LaunchPad and Axiom controller. Not a glitch!!!sanosdole wrote:Ableton Live 8 is very stable on my enviroment except for 3rd party plugs (I use a special PC just for music!)

Re: What happened to Ableton Live?
I must be missing something here, i dont really comment on forums because tend to just end up in petty comments and off topic crap.
But on the point of Ableton Live 8, ive had this for now over a year and never had problems with it at all, some people are talking here like its on its way out and is useless?, i use alot of vsts along with the internal fx etc and havint had a problem, so just so help put another side to this i couldnt be happier with it, best money i ever spent on software.
