they sound like they're being cut short, and also a bit thinner.
any idea what i'm missing here?

though, shouldn't the simpler just play the samples as they are, by default?

I think drum racks put a -12 level on each sample to avoid overloading the track with multiple samples playing. This might explain why it sounds thinner - it's quieter. I have no idea why they'd be cut short though.
