The tracks over view needs to be updated. That's where I do all of my composition and the fact that you can't zoom vertically is a real downer and has been requested by users frequently.
Honestly I would just like to see them clear up the 'Sequencer' window, it's a really good idea, that needs a few things to make it shine. Being able to edit MIDI and audio, automation etc. on one page is a great idea, it's just not easy enough to see MIDI data etc..... again, a more object oriented approach would help.
Movement of measures, (or re-arrangement of parts) can be done fairly easy if you highlight the row above the conductor track, (it highlights all tracks for as many measures as you want. Then you can apple+C: copy and then insert apple+K or snip apple+J into any other area for quick arrangement. This goes pretty quickly if you zoom out to 1 column = 8 measures.

But, it sounds like Logic does handle this more intuitively.

Absolutely, Logic definitely handles editing an arrangement very well! but it's good to know those sort of tricks, thanks, sounds a bit like how Live handles this in the Arrangement view.
Don't forget key commands. DP really excels with the ability to customize shortcuts with single key commands. And the new pitch tool is like getting auto-tune / melodyne for free.
Logic pretty much smokes everybody in the key command department, but yeah, I've already started to set up DP equivelants to the ones I use in Logic. I started in DP, and switched to Logic at DP 2.7.2, due to some small snags that ticked me off.... they all have them, but I needed a break I think.
Recently upgraded 2.7.2 to 5.1 and it's a strange experience for sure. In 2.7.2 I used chunks as folders basically, verse, intro, chorus etc. With Mackie Control etc. it's not as useful..... really wish Chunks could be rethought out.

Another snag to me is that DP records everything as SDII. I would rather use WAV or AIFF. Though Live can handle SDII I would rather use AIFF personally, simply because Apple is developing tools for audio into AIFF that Live and other apps might be able to use some day.
One of the selling points to DP for me is that it can print FX to audio in the sample editor, and record virtual instruments to a track in DP. To me, because I will eventually want anything I do in any other DAW in Live, it would be nice to be able to use the audio file format I want to without doubling the amount of hard drive space that a song takes up. :?

This thread is 4 years old. Do people still feel the same -- Ableton's nice and immediate and does everything (to some degree), DP is deep and complicated but worth it if you've got the time?

More leaning towards DP with the release of DP7. Records in all file formats now, Track Overview is resizable, key commands and contextual menus all help make DP a much stronger choice. I haven't opened Logic in ages, and at the moment I'm comping drum tracks in DP7, something that would be painfully slow and awkward in Live. Again also, Live's Automation choices are next to nil, whereas in DP you have Touch, Latch etc. plus a feature unique to DP, Automation Mixes. In the same project/song etc. you can save multiple mixes and easily call up an older mix to see if you're going in the wrong direction etc. I suppose you could have a mix for YouTube, CD and radio if you wanted.

In the mix down department DP7 is IMO far above Logic and devastates Live. When it comes to initial ideas it's a draw. IMO DP has better quantization, but Session View is a real killer feature. As of now I'm deep into Mixing tracks we recorded a while ago, but when I'm back into songwriting mode I'm probably going to rewire Live into DP7 and work that way for a while to see if it jibs with me. On the surface it's the best of both worlds, but I recall getting burned out on the limitations of Rewire when I used it with Logic and Reason. :x

Sorry :) I never realized that could be a problem. In future I'll start a new thread and include a link to the old discussion instead. Thanks for pointing it out.

this sums up my feelings in general, DP's depth can be overwhelming, but irreplaceable after your used to it and have found your way around inside of DP's options.

on the other hand live is definitely better for newer people as its stripped down nature offers a much faster learning curve and both can produce top notch sound, its work-flow is very simple but powerfull, where DP is complicated but more powerful.

Wow! I opened this thread not realizing that I was the one who started it 4 years ago!!!!! 8O 8O 8O

I'm still a pc user, and I'm still interested in DP. If I ever switch to Mac, I think I'll be a user.
