Focus training
Just wondering if their were any music makers out their keen share their secrets about maintaing & strengthening their focus. Personally, I take a break every 10-15 mins which really slows my pace/efficiency. Your thoughts?
Re: Focus training
I enjoy music. I make it when I want to. I don't when I don't.
I haven't so much as opened Live in the last 2 weeks, as I have been hard at work taking drugs and offending people, but I'm not worried. I'm too busy being awesome.

You have to decide if music is something you piss about with when the mood takes you are something you are going to do whatever mood you are in - thats a conscious choice you have to make and some personal mental conditioning you have to do, perhaps born out of making it a routine, perhpas quite strict to start with.
I guess if your day job is something creative rather than mundane or purely logical, then its a much easier transition to make. The trouble many people seem to face is that when music isnt their day job, then giving something the kind of focus, commitment and consistency etc they give to a day job is about the last thing they want to do at home in evening/weekend and especially regardless of what kind of mood they are in. Its often made more difficult by working in an environment you generally associate with rest etc (ie your home).
For me switching my mindset between semi-pro/hobby -> full time day job in home based studio has been the hardest transition over the past couple of months since I quit my IT day job (and not helped by still dealing with all the excess stress and ongoing tiredness still in my system from my old day job).
Previously it was very rare to do more than a few hours in a stretch, and even then the level of foucs was different. Now an 8 hour or more day at it is the norm, so pacing that time has become very important to keep my ears and head fresh all day and perhpas the hardest bit is being consitently creative regardless of how I feel when you might have been just used to doing it only when your are in the mood etc - kind of essential when that what the people who are in expect of you.

Nothing to see here - move along!

Yep, for sure mate. Turn off the internet. Turn off or unplug your phone (or leave it in another room on silent). Set up a plan for what you want to work on in your track before your session and stick to it. There's a great book called the Power of Focus by Les Hewwit.squiddy_drop wrote:Just wondering if their were any music makers out their keen share their secrets about maintaing & strengthening their focus. Oh, and no girlfriends around! They are a big distraction. Studio first, girlfriend second
Meditation is also HUGE for focus. I'd recommend a meditation before your session, rather than breaks every 10-15 minutes. I power hard in the studio for 4 hours at a time, sometimes longer with no breaks.
Here's a video that might help too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_JReiE1uFk
Great question. Cheers!

One of my uncle sit with his guitar and start writing notes as if it flows through his hand. He feels he is gifted and does this frequently in his room.

Re: Focus training
Get a deadline to do some music work. Nothing gets me focused like a cheque hanging in front of my nose and the fear of missing a deadline.
