Ableton Live 9 soon? thoughts?
Re: Ableton Live 9 soon? thoughts?
I, for one, would love to see a complete overhaul. My sessions in front of Live seem to have gotten a little stale lately. Makes me not want to "try" to make music anymore.
Re: Ableton Live 9 soon? thoughts?
Looking for a buyer if you ask me, far too small to compete. The 'quality' initiative might even have been a prerequisite from someone already.......

Yeah, 64-bit just got me to upgrade my Cubase to 6.

I don't know if this means a lot to most users, but I would really like to see a better reverb. Live has the worst reverb ever. My old ASR 10's reverb sounds light years better than Live. I don't care if it's convolution or algorithmic, just give us a factory reverb that's really worth using.

Re: Ableton Live 9 soon? thoughts?
I prefer stay with Live for now.
So much work in the workflow for years and for who want to perform and have fun "DJing" there is not in the market to compare with Live´s session view.
All these DAW´s have an linear production perspective, and Live has it´s linear view too (Arrangement), it´s lack many features BUT, maybe L9 will have some features missing right now, as session automation for example, maybe better loop shortcuts to performers in session view too, etc, etc
Maybe this can be a dream, but I prefer wait some months and wait instead of spend some $$$ on other software and see later that L9 will do the job ...
I only think that it´s the most resonable.
In other hand, I think that if L9 does not bring REALLY new stuff, ableton will loose a big user base
IMHO

i've posted it before... many times... but if Live had a good reverb i wouldn't really be all that tempted to use plugs at all.

well i would hope for 64 bit support that is pretty much the only thing

Re: Ableton Live 9 soon? thoughts?
I'll get it if my glitches stop!
My list of things I'd definitely get it for:
* I'd want 64-bit too so I can use all my 8GB RAM (that I bought in the hope it'd stop my glitches).
* I'd like a few nicer/refined FX plugins (since I generally use all ableton stuff).
* A few GUI tweaks e.g. MIDI editing and dual screen support so I can have Session on one and Arrange on the other, or Session/Arrange on one, and MIDI editing on the other.
* And by the sound of it I'd like I'd like full PDC.
If it does those I'm having it ASAP.
This weekend I should have my hands on a 2009 C2D 13" Macbook Pro, and a 2011 13" i5/i7(?) macbook pro. Then I'll finally know if my 17" 2010 i7 has something wrong with it, or it's some bug in Live that regularly shows up in most of my sets. Then I can GUARANTEE there's something wrong with Live since every single other part of my system has been fiddled with, poked or changed to try to stop them, and I can pester Abe tech support repeatedly since it's definitely not my system.
If I can cure the dropouts then I'll spend more time making music and less worrying about L9 and if I should buy it. Currently I have to freeze certain stuff to gurantee no glitches, which is silly when I'm trying to write and keep tweaking, and I'm running at only 35% on the meter with uncomplicated sets. Freezing also stops me being able to sidechain a (frozen) synth to my (frozen) kick drum too.
Does anyone know much about Live's handling of i7 hyperthreading and/or intel speedstepping? Until I try these other macbooks the only thing I can think of is there's a glitch if a track is in the virtual hyperthreaded core and doesn't get chance to process cuz the real cores are busy, else going from a lower speed to higher speed when a more CPU intresive bit of the song hits means intel speedstepping causes a glitch.
If I still have problems I may be giving out Live Packs for 2010 i7 MBP owners with session drums to play with...

Re: Ableton Live 9 soon? thoughts?
quote from Morphosis in an interview on RA: "We lock music with Ableton,
sequencers and drum machines.
What I do is try to…free it."
I guess it's one of the reasons I stopted using ableton (and not much later stopped dj-ing altogether).
At first I was so excited with a tool that let you use samples and tracks in new ways, it freed you from the pitch limitations of a turntable.
But in return, it really did lock you into the grid of the ableton bpm.
There is no way to play music outside the warp (unless you turn it of, but then it becomes useless).
I'm still hoping live 9 will have the following. Maybe I'll give it another go:
-lauching tracks on different bpm level if you want to (not all tracks need to be beatmatched)
-multiple loops/cue points in a track.
-a filebrowser that works with tags and albumcovers. Would be great if clips had the ability to show tags and album artwork too. Instead of the filename.
-a search function for tracks within a set (sounds stupid if you're never used this as a dj probably, but you sometimes get lost in a 4 hour set or something).
-I also kept playing with an audio mixer, instead of a midi mixer because midi is just too slow to do propper cuts etc... Apparantly, theres a new midi format out?
-soundquality still not all that. But I'm thinking this is more the problem of 16 bit wav files and "loudness war"-style mixing than it is abletons fault.
Anyway, I know you get a "lol, dj's" type of response whenever you post something on these forums, bt I just thought I gave my opinion. And my reasons why I stopped using live.
also, a lot more advanced but, I love morphing:

Re: Ableton Live 9 soon? thoughts?
Put the BPM in the scene name so it auto changes the BPM on scene launch? Don't warp the clip of the last section of the song/outro you don't want to jump to the new tempo (see below)mrfart wrote: -lauching tracks on different bpm level if you want to (not all tracks need to be beatmatched)
I'd cut them into chunks so each section of the song is a separate clip, that way would be more flexible. You can always use follow actions if you want them to run into each other without user intervention.mrfart wrote: -multiple loops/cue points in a track.

Warping makes things sound worse. For best quality don't warp, or try different warping types to find the best sounding.mrfart wrote: -soundquality still not all that. But I'm thinking this is more the problem of 16 bit wav files and "loudness war"-style mixing than it is abletons fault.
I fully appreciate these may not work for you, but thought I'd say some ideas in case they might be helpful...

I'm aware of all the tricks to try to get around the limitations.
And wasted a lot of time trying them out.
But in the end, you end up making very planned out dj sets with little flexibility.
You're just pushing start buttons on something you already did at home, might aswell just play a prerecorded mix.
Anyway, I lost that feeling of freely experimenting while dj-ing.

You cannot compare Live to DJing like turntables or cdjs, to do this you will be better with traktor or serato, or stay with hardware...
IMO, Live is for another type of DJIng, if we can call it "DJing", I think in mainly use Live to drop sample loops in the middle of the set, on the fly remixes, synth loops, crazy effects racks, mix with some tracks that you produce that you have all parts as separate tracks/scenes, etc, etc, etc
You cannot do this with 2 decks setup (even 4 as traktor)...
I imagine me as Live user asking in the traktor forum for features that I have on Live, will be funny...
Anyway, I think(hope) that L9 will bring some features to "DJing".
Re: Ableton Live 9 soon? thoughts?
Yeah, but serato and traktor have their own problems.rsaulo wrote:

I guess bridge was made for this. But after messing around with ableton so long I can't find the time, interest and money to invest in all this new stuff.
And just adding different cuepoints and an option to start a track at a different bpm doesn't sound like such a big demand to implement in live.
And it's not just dj-ing. I have a lot of friends who perform live with ableton "live".
And usually the live set is not much more than pushing play buttons of scenes.
Ofcourse, you could say that's not really abletons fault, since it is possible to do so much more.
But the irony of ableton live seems to me that everyone who performs live with it does all of the work at home preparing their music before they go out "live".
