Getting that Trance-Gate Effect

Post by ramangill » Mon Mar 28, 2011 7:04 pm

Hi,

I downloaded a demo of Nexus and I really like the TranceGate (TG) option. But then I started to think about it and I was wondering if it is doable in Live? Anyone got this going? Anyone care to share how they acheived it? Could it be done using a Sylenth1? I was looking online to see but nothing...so I thought I would ask it here.

Sylenth1 or Live folks..either or would be nice and helpful.

You can fake a trace gate by using (appropriately enough) the Gate effect in Live, by sidechaining it to another signal.

1. Add a drumloop/drum beat/16th note hihat line and mute it (click the track number).

2. Make a pad, add a Gate, click the little dropdown arrow next to the device title, and choose the drumloop track as your input source.

3. Play with the threshold/attack/release settings until you get a sound you like.

Interesting. I will have to give this a try.

Curious though. I assume you meant "make a pad" as in make a pad sound using for example some soft synth right? Why a pad? Can it be with whatever, like a lead or bass or whatever?

Yep, I meant make a pad sound (or use one of the presets included with Live.)

It works with any sound source, but pads seem to work the best because they don't have the abrupt attack/decay that other sounds do, which can make it sound kind of stuttery and odd.

Do try lots of different sounds though - it's a pretty sweet effect once you get the hang of it.

Got any good ones or recommended? Which device/instrument and it's presets?

Not sure of any offhand. If you've got Suite, check out the Instrument Racks>Synth Pad and try some of those out until you find something you like.

If you've got Sylenth 1, you can use the arpeggiator as modulation source, and hook it up to the main volume of the synth's amp; let's you create nice variations to the gate.

This, +1 -- works like a charm. Very easy to setup, also try it on the filter cutoff, etc. Definitely will get you trance gate FX.

Synth1 is capable of fat, multi-saw, detuned trancey sounds.

You can sidechain with Gate from a drum or other track, as already stated.

If you hunt around on the web there are a few Synth1 soundbanks with a lot of trance patches in.

OK, I am new to the Sylenth1, lol. So a little guidance will be much appreciated. I tried to search on youtube but no luck. Maybe my search criteria was not good enough....either way you guys are the masters at it...so help a brutha out!

By the way, I am not really into Trance...more like House, all types. I just think with Trance-Gate you can open up a lot of options.

Even though I don't use it as much as I used to I have a Trance-Gate type setup as part of my Live Template set. Live's Gate with side chain works great!

Live's auto pan can be used to get a chopping effect as well.

Set the phase to 0 and the amount up to 100%

No need to get defensive about it - everyone's entitled to a taste in music :)

Achieving this in Sylenth 1 is really easy:

1) Load one of the init patches on page 4 (or a pad sound you like).
2) Under "Misc 1", set "Step velocity" as source, and "Mix AB" as target in the dropdown directly below. Turn the knob next to "Mix AB" all the way to the right.
3) Under Sylenth 1's mixer section, pull both Mix A and Mix B all the way down.
4) In the blue window in the middle of Sylenth's interface, go to the arpeggiator (ARPEG) tab - don't activate it (that is, make sure there's no hatch in the box on its left). Set every second velocity step to 127 and every second to 0 (as a start). Play a chord, and hear how it sounds.
5) Now you can play around with the "time" and "gate" knobs, also in the blue centre window; typically, you want to set "time" to 32.

Remember that you can hook pretty much anything up to a modulation source, so you could try setting filter cutoff, for instance, as the target instead of or in addition to "MIX AB"
