Mac Book Pro 13" and external screen

Post by Bebbo » Mon Mar 28, 2011 1:55 pm

Hello,

I want to purchase a new laptop, I would like to know if it is possible to run ableton live in a external screen 1920x1200 with the new MacBook Pro 13", I currently have a Macbook white of middle 2008 and I can not run ableton with an external screen because the Graphic Interface can not handle it. The image is really slow and not fluid.
I do not want to buy a product that present the same problem, so I would like some feedback from some one that is using live with a macbook pro 13" in an external screen.

Wierd I am running a 2007/2008 white macbook, external 20" monitor, the only thing it chokes on is when I run full-screen video. Are you editing video with Ableton or just doing music?

Just doing music, is it your monitor at 1920 and everything is running fluid?

I don't recall the res settings but it's somehwere around there. How much RAM do you have?

Only tried I few times, but didn't notice any problems running live on previous gen c2d 13" mbp with 24" monitor. Fairly sure it was on 1920 x 1200. Certainly looked like full res.

Yeah with 4 gb of RAM you should not be having a problem with that computer.

Do you have other programs open at the same time?

I don't know, I could ask you the million questions about how you use it, but I think the problem isn't the computer itself (unless it is in some way a defective unit).

All my programs are closed.
I always thought that it was normal, because my computer perform well with every program and also with Live on the laptop screen. Even if the screen is not fluid when I use the big one the audio is perfect, it is clearly a problem related with the video interface that can not handle Live then.
Does your Macbook have dedicated memory for video? Maybe even if you have less memory because your macbook is older Live does not like too much the fact that memory is shared with RAM, like in mine. I am just supposing :? :?

Strange, I have a macBook 13' (not pro) bought in 2010, connected to an external dell 20' screen (dual screen) and live 8 is running fine on it.

mac book pro have a better video card than macbook, it should not be a problem.
Did you try to reduce the resolution to see if the performance improves ? Can you read any video in quicktime ?

Ok mine external display is running at 1680x1050. I don't know enough about these things to know if the resolution you want is that much worse.

My graphics chipset is Intel GMA X3100 which I assume is built into the cpu.

is it a mini dvi or mini display port?

coz i remember reading somewhere that those mini dvi adaptors would only work properly on dvi-d make sure your monitor is dvi-d not dvi -a
