Undo history management

Post by Mr F » Sat Jul 18, 2009 3:28 pm

Would be really nice to have a undo history window with a list of events so that you could go right back to a particular point as opposed to keep having to press ctrl z.

Something similar to how adobe photoshop manages it would be great! 8)

your suggestion is very nice. but how about something even simpler such as increasing the number of "undos" you can make? is this available in Albeton Live (v8) ?

in Photoshop when you use the History to undo, you are essentially doing the same thing as using multiple undos, the difference being that Photoshop only has one [standard] undo... otherwise you have to go to the History palette. its more of a part time [beefy] shortcut, but you still can't truly pick and choose. if you select the 3rd from the last undo you still lose the 1st and 2nd so its really the same as being able to hit 'ctrl + z' 3 times, you just don't see a list of your actions.

however, that list of actions would be a nice addition. agreed.

I doubt it. Personally, I rename the set... as so... Beat, Beat_02, Beat_03, and on and on until it gets mixed down. I rely on a trail of success rather than a trail of undos - because, IMO, relying on Live to remember all your actions creates a scenario where 1. More resources are consumed and 2. If Live crashes, you're fucked. Not so much with multiple saved versions. YRMV

ok, so that sounds like a good idea. but does this add a new file each time, so multiplying file size taking up hard drive space? like if i save a new version of photoshop file for every so many changes, then its gonna add a bunch of files and take up harddrive space. i wud rather just take a lil memory space have have at least 25 undos or something....right now i think it feels like live has 5 undo states, lol.

yes, but...

it only adds a new .als file. if you look at the size of those files - 35KB, 60KB, hell even at 200KB (a set with macros, presets and tracks for days), you can afford it. 15+ sets per Megabyte is hardly going to affect drive space these days. you consume more space logging in to your homepage on facebook.

remember, the audio is stored in another folder in your set. MIDI data has practically no file size in today's terms... all the .als file does essentially is say "this is how Live will be configured and what audio files it will use when you double click me". Live reads the set and you're back at it.

the .als file only contains the last known location of the audio, not the audio itself which is what makes it different from the Photoshop scenario where all the data is stored in a the .psd regardless of what you name it and how many times you've hit File > Save As previously.

I think its a great idea, and to alleviate the worry of live crashing and losing your changes/undo history, live should also auto save periodically(during moments of inactivity) to an emergency file, but also save the undo history.

What i'd really like to see is a seperate undo history per track, because countless times i've made several changes on multiple tracks and then found i'm unhappy with a change I made several changes previously, but had to undo all of the changes I was happy with in order to return one rogue track to its former glory.

I'm not really down with autosave (gets the good and the bad) but I like the idea of undo by track. For sure, that would be a cool feature.

that's already in except no undo reload.

i'm thinking ctrl +z for global undo and ctrl + shift + z for selected track undo.

Unless the abes want to be extremely kind and have a list of undo's both global and track, where you can choose any undo and not undo more recent changes, or like in windows file explorer you could select multiple actions to undo by ctrl clicking them, and selecting continuous list of undos to undo by clicking the first and shift clicking the last undo. That way you could preserve more recent parameter alterations on both global and track level. Effectively having an undo/redo history per parameter!

Thats probably asking a bit much though of the programming team, so i'd happily settle for per track undo/global undo.
