Capturing BCR/F Settings

Post by GBR303 » Tue Mar 29, 2011 11:26 am

Hey guys,

So I've got Ableton running on a Mac, with a BCF and BCR plugged in.

Everything has been set up and tweaked to the point where I've lost track of whatever logic I was using......

What I need to do it capture the settings from the controllers and save it along side the Ableton set, then when I load the set, I can dump the settings back to the controllers.

Any ideas?

I think you might have it slightly backwards if i understand you right - ive a bcr - just save the ableton set as youd like it starting up (if its correct now, save it now, or as a seperate set just in case) - then - when you open a set, live automatically sends midi messages to the bcr to align it up with the mapped knobs and faders in ableton and all the leds will be correct. Just make sure in Lives midi preferences the bcr "remote" is turned on.

Theres a slight prob in that if youre using multiple bcr presets in a single ableton set, ableton will only autosend the correct midi info to the currently opened bcr preset. Not updating preset 2 or 3 etc. The covert operator website has a handy workaround for this, but if youre just planning to use one bcr preset per set dont worry about it.

Hope this helps, i could help more if understood more the "Everything has been set up and tweaked to the point where I've lost track of whatever logic I was using......"

EDIT: oops meant turn on BCR MIDI OUTPUT TRACK - ON. I leave the "remotes" on anyways.

Also - if youre on mac and using mapped AU plugins youll have a prob - vsts only send out the midi the bcr needs to update itself. AUs wont send feedback info so the leds line up. I stopped using audiounits because of this.

Hey Moonpie,

Thanks for that, however....

I have programmed the controllers so that, for example, the first and last column of rotarys are on ch 1 and the middle 6 on ch 2. I've also programmed the push buttons so that they are on trigger. There was some logic behind this, but, like I say, after further tweaking of the controllers, this has now gone out of the window.

I understand that there is a way to output these settings and record them somehow, but not really sure how this is done.

As there has been many hours spent programming the controllers, I would prefer to get someone's direct experience on it before playing around with it.

Hopefully that sheds more light on the issue!

Many thanks!! :)

By "output these settings" do you mean backup? Or do you mean - somehow see the overall state of your bcr and make sense of the whole thing again? The 1st you can use sysex librarian. For the 2nd - you cant use mac. Youll have to find a windows pc and install either behringers b control edit software from the behringer page or http://home.kpn.nl/f2hmjvandenberg281/bcman.html . And trust me on this - I had problems with both. Needs to have xp, anything higher doesnt seem to work. You might have better luck with the bc manager than I did. Was an absolute pain. Even though the behringer software required a bleedin downgrade of java(!) to work, i still got it to work... eventually. Had no luck at all with bc manager. Even though thats apparently the better software.

For your own piece of mind and sanity (unless you have a special reason) I would start with a clean slate and have each bcr preset a diff midi channel. Thats complex enough for me anyways! Just gets too complicated and very difficult to make a judgement which cc has been used already if you ever want to expand/use diff sets ect.

Again - the cover operators setup is what i go for now. Very useful point - you can actually WRITE in the software what youve set each control to do. It quickly wipes a single preset and gives you 1 single patch with a global midi channel of 1 and lets you change midi channel <at a software level>. I love it.

If none of this is helpful, or Im way off - maybe just explain - what is actually important to you - the sound your set is currently making or just the settings on your bcr?

There are also cardboard templates you can print off that nicely fit over your bcr and you can just write in by hand what each does in future.

Hey Moonpie,

Perfect! All done!

I've backed up the settings to SysEx Librarian and checked that the dump works the other way.

I use Ableton for DJing and for production, but didn't want to start reprogramming the controllers without a way of getting the settings back for the DJ setup.

Time to start playing!!! :D

Many thanks!!!

No problemo, glad you got what you wanted. Its so good to get hardware working the way you want and you can just worry about the music again.
