Memory for low latency?

Post by joewalch » Tue Mar 29, 2011 9:36 am

Hi

I have the following setup:

Intel E8400 @ 3.0GHz 1333Mhz
Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P r1.0 (1600MHz capable) uses Focusrite recommended TI Firewire chipset.
4 x 4GB OCZ2G8004G Gold running at 400MHz (total 16GB)
2 x WD 500gb sata II drives in raid 0
Saffire pro 40 firewire Audio I/O

On my server I have

Intel E7600 @ 3.06Ghz 1069Mhz
MSI G45M mobo
2 x 1GB ocz2A8001G DDR2-800 (ATI)
2 x 2GB ocz2F8002G DDR2-800 (Fata1ty) Total 6GB
4 x WD 1TB hard drives in Raid 10.

I am experiencing latency of up to 100ms (in Ableton Live) and I'm wondering if the bottleneck is the memory. Should I swap my server drive memory with the desktop memory, I would be reduced to 6GB but as they are gaming modules they may be quicker? Alternatively should I sell the 16GB of OCZ Gold and buy some faster rated memory for better performance?

Or am I wrong should I be looking at a better CPU?

100 ms latency is likely to be a problem with your audio interface. Are you using ASIO? What are your settings?

I was using something like 520ms buffer at 48k

I've just installed osx on a different HD for kicks and got the same equipment stable at 250ms at 48k
With these settings I synced my drumstation at 30ms.
