Hi,
I'm having a hella bad time trying to organize my racks for a set. See, like most people, I have a template for performances (kick, snare, lead, bass... etc) where I put in samples. However I have effects in each track that varies with the song. My chain list is becoming unruly and the MIDI, Chain and Macro mappings cannot be imported when I add a new chain. So I need to have a full chain list in each track with chains that I wont use in the set!
Problem: How to control rack chain selector using M4L? How to get the names/integers of chains inside Racks? How to save MIDI/Chain/Macro mappings?
Or better yet, is there a way yo automatically "hot-swap" racks? My hand is playing an instrument, far from the mouse...
Thanks!
How to organize racks?
Re: How to organize racks?
dude sounds like you need to simplify your deal
....i don't think you can automatically hot swap racks..unless you have multiple racks per track, and you midi map the device on/off button on each rack in each track to your midi controller ( by the way, what controller are you rocking??).the chain selector is mappable..you can have one rack per track and a chain per song in each rack... you can rename each chain to coincide with each song by hitting command or control r...
so in the rack, above your chains there is a box that says "chain" click on that....your "zone editor" should come up...(chart with lines from 1 to 127) beside each chain is a little blue line....(you can click and drag these) you need to make sure each blue line for each chain is on a different value on the scale by clicking and dragging each one to a different value on the scale....then map the "chain select ruler" (when you hit midi map... in the rack, the number 1 through 127) in all your tracks to one knob on your midi controller.....
so check it.....you will have 1 effects rack for each track you want one in, with all your different effects in chains divided up by song....the first chain in each rack in each track will be named something like "song 1".... in the "zone editor" , keep that little blue line where it is (since it is the first song)in every track....so that way when you turn your mapped out chain selector knob it will select the "song 1" chain in each rack in each track....do the same for song2 except move that blue line 1 value higher in each rack in each track...and so forth and so forth
you will have one knob that changes the effects in every track all at once........
how much of your effects are you going to tweak live? you can always prerecord them and prerecord automation??
i don't know if all of this is what you are after...but i would try to scale it back man....keep it simple....especially when playing out....the less you have to think about....the better your performance is going to be..

Re: How to organize racks?
Thank Eddiex for the insight
Very good tips there, specially about having multiple racks in the same track, since LiveAPI can read device names and switch them on and off.
In regards to keeping it simple, i totally agree with ya
to that end, I also live by the "keep it modular" motto. Which is why plug and play chain racks seem like such an attractive idea. What i failed to mention though, is that I perform with sensors all over my body that control sound in real time while im dancing. Think of it as a kind of "sound theater". Having full control of various parameters IS the performance. nothing better than a video to illustrate this:

Share away
U can imagine how complicated it is to me to make a set with so many things to control, huh?
