Multiple Midi Mappings MPD32

Post by thamantra » Mon Apr 04, 2011 8:25 am

Hey all,

What is the best way to map things efficiently? For, example what if you have all of the knobs mapped already to some effects or instrument rack parameters and then you wanna map some macro knobs from a drum rack or something? What about with the faders? if you map the faders to something other than the volume of a channel strip will the channel strip not be mapped to anything anymore?

Lastly, when you map something do those mappings remain where they are when you reopen the save project? Does anyone make multiple mapping presets for one project (1 for production and 1 for live performance, for example)?

MIDI and Key mapping with Live is pretty straightforward. Clicking the "KEY" or "MAP" buttons in Live, then selecting the parameter to map, followed by the physical control to map it to is all it takes to get started.

Your control mapping will remain intact when you re-open your Live Set, provided the devices you previously used are still connected. Because of this, it is possible to create sets to use as mapping templates for a standard starting point, or as you said - one for production, one for performance, and etc.

As for the rest, the easiest way to go about discovering what is possible with mapping in Live is to open it up with your MPD32 connected and discovering for yourself. Through standard mapping and extended features with macro controls - or even further now with Max for Live - you will find the possibilities for control are virtually limitless.

Thanks my dude.

When changing the banks controls on the MPD32, do the knobs and pads become cleared for more mapping?

MIDI Mapping maps two different kinds of things.

Notes or Control Change numbers.

Notes are like the pads on your controller.

Control Change is a number that keeps track of something you are adjusting. Like knobs, faders, buttons. Control Change numbers are shown in the browser when you are in MIDI Map mode.

You have 128 notes and 127 CC#'s on any given "Midi Channel". A Midi Channel is just, a separate channel of possibilities. There are 16 of those.

You might for instance have a fader that is on Midi Channel #1, CC# 7. Anything mapped to CC#7 will be adjusted by that fader. If you have a knob or fader that shares CC#7 on MIDI CH.1, then it too will control the same things.

Hopefully that will give you a little bit of an understanding of what your controller is doing.

Also, I'd look into any "Control Surface" presets for your device. There is usually a mode where, you can instantly adjust certain knobs on any device that you have highlighted (shows a blue hand on device title bar).

Good luck :)

Can I find a list of the preset midi mappings for a MPD32 in Abelton live 8 suite or is there even any?

I have an MPD32 which I use for automation and drumming.

If you set the MPD as a "control surface" in Live the control bank A will auto-map to the first 8 controls of any live instrument/effect (indicated by a little blue hand on the title of instrument/effect. I always keep this for auto-mapping and use banks B and C for manual mapping to controls in ableton. I also remap the buttons for control bank B to things like metrenome, override and loop to easily access these features when in a mix.

The faders for control bank A are auto-mapped to volume channel faders 1-8 but if you manually map a fader it will override its auto-map assignment and assign it to the new event. This is all saved in your project and will work the next time round.

I was dissapointed with the MPD honestly. Its more like a toy than a tool. No MIDI feedback, continous controllers that aren't true "continuous", Pads that require modifying to work properly. It looks nice though

Thanks Man! I got it because I am brand new to this and haven't made beats or produced in yrs. The opportunity to make money arised and I went out and bought what I had heard was the best, but I can't figure out how to use it! I have about 10 grand invested if I include the four I spent on a mac pro to run Abelton! Do I have to dump it again to get the a pad to preset? I have watched every u tube vid. and bought these lessons and still don't get it. Because I made beats on a mpc 2000 xl and turn tables, I have no knowledge of any of this and all the videos assume that I do. Do you have any suggestion for me? Thanks alot man!
