Post by markaugust » Thu Feb 02, 2006 4:16 pm

I am thinking of buying one, mainly cauz I want some pure analog, and I heard they are good stuff compared to what you pay for em. I can get one for 350 euros.
Tell me what you think if you own(ed) one..

Hi there. I have the MFB Synth Lite. It is a really fun little synth. I also have a drum box from MFB. The Synth Lite has a very nice sound and I imagine the Synth II has the same guts, but I must warn you the MFB synths are misleadingly labeled "analog" they in fact have digital oscillators!
check this review
http://www.retrosynth.com/gear/synthlite/index.html

One little problem you might want to be aware of is the outputs are 1/8" mini plug. They tend to be a bit "fiddley"- not causing any intermittent sound problems but just not very solid...

If the price is right I would recommend anything MFB , just be aware of what you are really getting (not really a moog synth)

Peace...

If you want a inexpensive "real analog" have a look at the Evolver (costs around 440 Euro new):

http://www.davesmithinstruments.com/evolver/photos.html

Real analog oscillators, filters and VCA but with lots of nice digital features like a patch memory. Also has 2 digital oscillators, 4 LFOs, 3 envelopes and a 4 track, 16 step analog style step sequencer that can be routed to anything.

Note that most sound examples you will find on the web showcases the weird noisemaking capabilities of the Evolver (which are excellent!), but it is perfectly capable of bread and butter sounds too.

Designed by David Smith who designed the Prophet 5, Prophet VS and Korg Wavestation (and MIDI....)

I own one and couldn't be happier.

Hi,

in fact the MFB Synth-II is pure analog, no DCO inside.... The synth-LITE II is equipped with DCO's, not the Synth-II. Anyway, don't forget that good old alpha-juno's from Roland were also equipped with DCO's, and they also sound good. :D

I own a Synth II, and it's pure pleasure ! A really good synth, its 3 VCO's give you so much possibilities. And you can change modulation routing via combinations of keys ! Go for it !

I have one. I love it. Sounds very raw and in your face.

I'll probably pick up an evolver as well though.

:)

i agree. on both points!

'bout the MFB: great sound and very fun to tweak. no menu digging bullshit: just knobs!

I just purchased an MFB Synth II and can record midi in to clip automation. But when I play back the clip it isn't receiving the automation. Do I need a midi to CV converter? I mean the synth is sending CC but it doesn't receive? Someone help! I need automation and I'm golden. :)

Evolver is awesome and everything, but not real analog. Evolver comes with DCO-chip.

2 VCOs, a VCF, and a VCA. i'd say that's pretty much real analog.
the fact it also has 2 DCOs doesnt mean its not real analog.

The MFB-SYNTH II is a monophonic Synthesizer module. It uses analogue circuits that are voltage controlled for oscillators, filters and amplification. my brother has already bought one, handsome

It's analog, yes, but not real analog.

hi, i have a mfb 503 drum machine and a mfb synthlite 2. they are super cool, but i use them only live, my main goal was to get my hands dirty live so i never put to much effort into recording with them, the few time i did it every sound have been replaced later by my ddrum and my roland sh 09, they just seems unable to stand out in my production, but as i said i never invested to much time with them in the studio.

live they sounds just superb and super portable!
