Looking for an Apt. in NYC

Hey, I'm looking for an apartment in the Brooklyn area. Any recommendations on nicer areas, or more importantly which areas to avoid?

I've never been to New York. Craigslist has a lot of places in Bushwick and Bay Ridge. I have no idea!

Opinions please!

bay ridge is far out there, bushwick is on the come up there are parts that are a little sketchy but for the most part its chill and cheap, probably not for long though
