Playing tracks live without laptop

Post by Fieldy » Thu Apr 14, 2011 11:52 am

Hey dudes!
i wanna leave laptop at home for gigs in the future. i play livesets for a while now.
i have all my tracks devided in lets say 8 tracks, and have these divided in 8 bar loops.
the octatrack seems to be one way , maybe even a mpc1000 (?) to house my tracks. what could you recommend for that?
you think to launch patterns with visual feedback with a apc40 or a livid block controller with one of these? if this works somehow i could say goodbay to laptop on stage.
greetings!

Octatrack + a drum machine + a good mixing desk + some FX.

Something like APC style, you won't find.

depending on if you're really needing backing tracks or backing loops that you can manipulate, if it's straight up backing tracks I'd track down an old roland vs-880/1680 to do the job, you'll get some very capable fx as well as a good mixer and you'll always be able to record your show, but if it's loops that you need to manipulate, I'd go with an mpc, kaoss pad, and a mackie 1202vlz mixer.

i'll go the mpc route, but you'll may find hard to go from one song to another, either you'll buy 2 of them, or you'll buy something like a kaoss pad or any other looping device to be able to hold a loop while you'll be loading.
get a mackie mixer and a couple of stomp boxes to add fx

my shopping list will be.

Mpc 1000
kaos pad 3 that you'll use for looping, filters and delay
mackie mixer
helectro harmonix reverb like holy grail does a great job live
top quality cables! something like monster cables, and buy some spares too, cables keep brokeing all the time while traveling

hmmm...mpc looks cute. but i have 8 Tracks when two songs Run parallel. so when i Start a New Song , i have to trigger 4 Tracks at a time.
of the mpc isn't Handy to Mix several tracks, maybe a octatrack would Be the better choice. hope it doesn't change the Sound As hard As machinedrum did

No, the machinedrum is "purposefully' 12bit. Saves space and emulates vintage samplers and drum machines. Don't know the octa specs, but it is definitely more hifi. Listen to the demos though, if you need to use timestretch, sometimes the octa isn't super smooth sounding. imo. But they look like crazy fun.
