Chain select + Beat Repeats on different chains = No Audio!

Post by Jeshua » Fri Apr 15, 2011 4:03 am

Hi, I'm making a beat repeat rack for a template and can't seem to get the chain select to work in a particular way. Here's a simplified version I've made of the rack.

Image

Basically the three chains are as follows: Clean has absolutely nothing on it and is used to essentially bypass the effects, Beat Rep 1 is used for 1/8 grid repeats, and Beat Rep 2 is used for 16th note grid repeats. In the macro controls I have one control mapped to the Chain Select and Speaker On of each Beat Repeat chain. So far selecting between the two chains does work, but if I wanted to beat repeat the same sample of audio sequentially within the rack, i.e. the cliché dance music build with an increasing grid to about 1/32nd, I haven't found a way.

And as a side note, yes I do know that I could use one Beat Repeat with its Grid function MIDI mapped to a CC, but I have a few ideas on a more complex rack of where multiple repeats could be selected as one off hits, used in tandem, and some odd ones mixed with other effects all housed in an effects rack controlled via MIDI notes through the chain select function. :D

Thanks

The problem in this case, is that when it is chain selected, it isn't getting any audio sent to it ahead of time that it can buffer. It 'listens' to whatever is coming, and uses that material for its slicing.

Here is a really crazy idea:

Have two "Utility" effects on the tail of every chain. Do not use the Chain selector at all. Map ALL of the 'Grid' of every Beat Repeat to the same macro knob, with the same min-max amount (make sure it is something you'll actually use), All Beat Repeats with "No Trpl" activated.

(actually, you might want to temporarily map the Chain for this part) Map the chain to the same knob, for now, and observe the Amounts. Write down each point on the chain at which the Grid changes values. Then remove the chain from Macro control altogether.

Finally, set every single "Mute" button on all of the Utility fx. This is the tricky part.
They will both be next to each other, The first mute button, turns "ON" when you get to a certain grid amount, the second one turns "OFF".

In action it'd be something like, You get to 1/16, Your first Utility mute was already off, but turns ON the moment it gets to "1/16", your second Utility mute is already turned on. The moment you get up to 1/32, that second Utility mute turns OFF.

Finally, you can have a 'clean' that has the two Utilities, but no Beat Repeat.

Great idea has solved that issue! I'm sure I'll bump into a few more in the next few days, but the learning process is never truly over.

Thanks!

Great work around! I ran into this issue too when making my SuperLuper2 rack, ended up having to map the grid parameter and a lot of other nonsense when the utility idea is a lot easier. Nice one.
