Frozen tracks editable...

Post by XHale » Fri Mar 18, 2011 12:11 pm

Please give an option, to select the effect/device until which to freeze the track.
All effects in the chain AFTER the frozen ones can still be edited and will be calculated in real-time.

That would make it possible to freeze an VST-Instrument and still edit the EQ for example without unfreezing.

Well, THAT sounds like a workaround for me :)
By the way it works like that already!

It is possible!
I am not talking about certain parts of the track!

I am talking about devices in the device (or signal) chain.

For example:

You have a VST-Synth on a Midi-Track, a Chorus, a Delay and an EQ in this order.
If u freeze the whole track, the whole device chain will be rendered to audio and therefore be locked.
If u could set the device until which u want to render the track to audio, u could leave out some of the devices at the end of the device chain.

In this example, u could only freeze the VST-Synth, the Chorus and the Delay (those devices will be locked/frozen).
But still be able to change the EQ-settings, because the EQ is not rendered to the audio file (will still be calculated in real-time)...

Of course that only works from left to right in the device chain!
It won't be possible to leave out only one device somewhere in the middle of the device chain.

Know what I mean?

+1! This is a great idea :)

I use real time track freezing when working with my hardware synth and it works a treat. My synth can only play one patch at once and so track freezing allows me to move on to a second layer.

As suggested, it would be helpful to be able to freeze the recorded audio whilst still having control over (and being able to automate) the devices that follow the frozen audio in the chain, e.g. adjust filters / effects without having to unfreeze, adjust things and re-freeze (which takes some time when freezing in real time!)

As mentioned this is achievable by placing the track in a group, which works well - would be even nicer to have it in a single track though.
