Hey,
I have a looper that can be slaved to an external MIDI clock (Ableton Live). The looper works fine when set to a tempo, but does not receive any MIDI start/stop messages!
The looper has a MIDI learn feature, which means that if you send a MIDI PC message you can set it to the looper's MIDI Start/Stop command.
My question is how do you send a MIDI PC message (eg. Channel 1 PC001) out of Live when pressing play? or stop? I can't seem to get this working.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Sending out MIDI messages
The only way you're going to get live to send a PC message is by using a MIDI clip to do so.
Any clip will do. Just open the clip and you've got your Notes area. Bank, Sub-Bank, and Program change messages are there.
Not sure why you would need a PC for that, though. Does the looper have a MIDI table in the manual? If so, there should be a designated MIDI CC or note assignment for start/stop (and just about every other setting).
In this way you could use the much more reliable CC or Note method. I haven't experienced any weirdness with Bank/PC changes out of Live, but I know others here have had issues with certain hardware.
You mentioned that the looper can be slaved to Live's clock. If so, then it should be responding to Live's start and stop automagically! I'd check to make sure the looper settings are correct and that sync is set to external receive.
Of course, triggering the Start/Stop on the looper is NOT the same as keeping it in proper MIDI sync with a clock.

Hi and thanks for your reply!
I think its very weird the looper does not receive MIDI start/stop messages. What I'm trying to set up is whenever I hit stop in Live, it sends a message to the looper to stop too. (I'm using a Looperlative LP1).
Regarding the MIDI list of information (CC's 1-127), I'm pretty sure it has one but it is much easier to program MIDI messages to trigger whatever feature you would like.
I did what you recommended and programed a MIDI note to be sent to the looper from Live which is programmed to play when pressing Live's 'Play' button. I thought this would at least partially solve the problem, but the looper doesn't respond to the message and instead just keeps playing the loop indefinately.
I think this problem has more to do with my looper than with Live. This isn't the first time there has been issues with MIDI and my looper.
I know what you mean about this not being properly in sync. The thing I am finding most annoying is once I stop the clock in Live, the looper just keeps running and its very hard to sync them back again (you literally have to press space exactly at the beginning of the loop).
Cheers

Re: Sending out MIDI messages
Hi,
I've just been through a big issue of weird midi messages sended and going crazy with that.
On my mac studio M1, all the issues desappear when i disconnect the wifi.
Very strange but working now, with a RJ45 wire.
