slicing to midi - get rid of the click at slice end?

Post by mr.ergonomics » Fri Apr 22, 2011 4:10 pm

hi, maybe there is a workaround for this I don't know that why is just ask... even when I don't think it there is one.

when I slice to midi in ableton the end from the slices introduce a small click due to a missing fade-out (depends on the wav form, I don't want to talk about basics here). what I want is basically a small fade out at slice end (opposite to attack...).

I only know two ways to get rid of this click.

- snap on for zero crossing, but that moves the slice 'end' and 'start' points.
- adjusting the decay. but really.... this is is a pita³

so my questions:

-how do you deal with this?
-does a mpc/maschine do a small fade out against clicking at the end of a slice? kontakt does this with 'zone envelopes' and I like it

set up your markers better before it slices? it sounds like your markers aren't starting at the beginning of the sound...

thanks ARDJ, but it's the end which is the problem.

example:

- I have a snare with a natural ambience noise after the snare hit.
- when I play the sample and the "end marker" is at this ambience noise I get a short click (I know why... no zero crossing or fade out).
- normally I would add a short release in the sampler to fade out, but I can't do this in this case because I would hear the next hit.
-> I need a small fade out at the slice end

I work with kontakt at the moment because of this, since it automatically adds a small fade out and the slice end. I would love to work more with abletons own tools....like the wokrflow better.

got it, i was suggesting adjusting the start markers because i assumed

clip 1 started fine but ended with a bit of clip 2's attack in it, so if you pushed the start market back a bit on clip 2 then it wouldn't have that extra bit in it. I find all the time w/ different swing settings and audio loops this happens a lot.

I get now what you're saying now though, I guess the best way to do it then (if you still want to use slice to midi instead of kontakt) would be to do your own fades in the audio clip before you sliced. I can't think of any other work around at the moment unless there's a rack you can download that will adjust each of the simpler's 'fade' knob...

i struggle to find workarounds for this issue as well. machine does have some slice fade tools, although i haven't found an easy way to use the maschine tools either. i still like slicing in ableton more.

lately i use one of two methods:

1) i go to the midi and just shorten the midi notes that produce clicks (easy to do while holding "alt" on the pc).
this way the release envelope in simpler closes before the slice ends playback.

2) or, using the "built-in" slice, I try to mess with adding some looping, tinkering with the bottom 4 macro knobs until the clicks go away, but also trying to make the looping nearly inaudible. kind of hard but it works sometimes.

Not at my machine at the moment but wondering if you create a default slicing simpler that has "snap" enabled if it will do the trick.

Could one of you send me a file so that I can take a look? I don't have that problem when I slice to midi.
