Would you recommend an iPad v1?

Post by condra » Thu Apr 28, 2011 10:30 am

Hi all.

I'm coming into some cash and was thinking about treating myself.
The price of second-hand first gen iPads is pretty good now.

It's a no brainer right? Just wondering if there's any convincing reason why I should spend the (fair bit) extra to get an iPad 2.

Thanks for any pointers.

If you ask us - dont go for ipad 1. The 2nd revision is just so much faster and smoother. Even on existing apps like touchAble you can feel a performance increase!
If you are getting the ipad for making music: go for ipad2 - it will be worth it once developers start getting the bet out of it.

Please do up a favor and get on the Ipad2. To spend on the extra money is all in the worth it.
The feature on using to the DVI adapter to your tv is it very nice.
Ipad v1 had to buy a DUMB COVER.
Ipad2 is fitting onto SMART COVER.

3 in a row in favour of saving the extra cash for an iPad2. Not the response I was expecting! I thought I would just be tipped over the edge to get an iPad1.

I'll have to look into it a bit more.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen.

If iPad 1 isn't quite enough for what you want, and iPad 2 is too expensive, just put the money aside and don't worry about it. You'll save a little extra money up and it's not like the ipad2 is going to get more expensive or anything. Better to take your time than to rush-purchase.

Buy the ipad 2, it's better because it's the second generation

I have a first-gen iPad, I think it's great and have no problems at all with touchAble or TouchOSC (or other music apps). Maybe the iPad 2 is faster, but if the price is very low and you want it now, you might as well go for it.

If you will ever use it to browse the internet then you will definitely want the iPad2. I had the iPad1 for a week and took it back because the processor was so, so slow. I now have the second generation and love it.

Another vote for the iPad 2.
I have a first gen, and I love it, but I just tried a 2 out the other day and the speed difference is pretty substantial. Unless you can get a REAL cheap iPad 1, or money is really tight, just spend the extra money and get version 2.

I plan on selling mine soon to get the second gen, and I was dead set on holding out for awhile before upgrading.
Just the difference with Garageband for iPad alone is huge.

On my 1st gen I get lots of "optimizing audio" stalls, not that big of a deal... UNTIL I tried the 2nd gen and it ran flawlessly with no stalls of course. Now I get frustrated when mine is stalling, which is stupid and bratty, but happens nonetheless, haha.

There was a huge performance increase from the iPad 1 to the iPad 2. There are already apps optimized for the iPad 2 that either look like or run like shit on the iPad 1. I wouldn’t be surprised if we start seeing apps that don’t run on the iPad 1. Even now iMovie won’t work on the iPad 1. iPad 2 sales are expected to way outpace the iPad 1 sales, the whole “always wait until the second generation der der der” contingency. I wouldn’t expect a lot of developers to focus on silky smooth backwards compatibility.

And trust me, you WILL reach a point when you want to do so much more than launch clips with it.

In general I wouldn't expect idevices to have the same lifespan as computers so if you can I would get whatever current version they are on.
