i spent the 15 hours over the last 24 working on it.
still no luck.. the express card gets here on Saturday, hopefully that does the trick.

in the end i'd really prefer to be able to access my file server and the net..
i suppose a dual boot with linux and win 7 would work out..

the main thing is to see if i can get the firestudio even working
if not find a motu 8 pre to test and go from their.

haha this is why i tell my close friends that don't geek out on computers to get a mac
i don't want to go through all this more than once every 3-5 years.
all that being said, this is my last pc.. i'm sick of the it just works after you trouble shoot it and tweak for a few days.
well i did save like $800 though :)

I hope that express firewire works for you. ADK uses this. http://www.provantage.com/siig-nn-ec201 ... IFW00U.htm

 the express card didn't work
i don't really know what else to do
other then disable everything and see if it works..
i'm downloading linux to use for my main os
then i can set up win 7 as pure daw...

i'd rather just sell the laptop and buy a mac at this point
but i need to sell of some gear to make up the difference.

i had MBP santa rosa 15. bought an HP envy 15 was 40 percent cheaper, 25 percent more powerfull.
just tweak your pc, install all you need and then make a ghost image, if got a pb you reinstall in 5mn (i do every 3month or so..)
that make me loose 15 mn a year.
there are plenty of pc more powerful than MPB at same price: lenovo, asus, alienware, HP, dell ect.
in pure hardware terms the mac thing is bullshit. it's high quality but overpriced compared to pc.

what happens when the clock stops in ableton, are you just losing all audio? how often does this happen. is it glitchy, or really smooth and once in a while just stops?

Lenovo is a Chinese company. They were the manufacturer of ThinkPads when they were still sold by IBM. Several years ago IBM got out of the PC business and sold the brand to Lenovo.

They're definitely well made. I've been using a not very powerful model mainly for Web access and sometimes as a secondary music PC for about five years. I've been carrying and banging it around pretty roughly and there is nothing wrong with it even after numerous drops. Surprising given that I bought it secondhand. I'd certainly get another if I were in the market for a PC laptop. I've had a couple of Sony Vaio's that started to fall apart within a couple of years.

One of my favorite ThinkPad chassis design features is that many of them can be carried around by the lid/screen when it is open. The hinges are super-tough and there is a plastic lip at the top of the screen so you can keep a grip on it. The bottom of the case also has a much thicker lip that extends out the back even when the lid is open, giving you another place to grip it.

clock stops all audio stops but its not a drop out its the clock just stops, then it restarts in about a second.
happens pretty often.. some times it glitches but mostly its a smooth stop like i hit the space bar.
