recalling vst presets, volume and aux settings in one shot

Post by unguitar_2011 » Sun May 01, 2011 8:26 pm

Hello,
I am exploring Live with the intention to check if it can work as my main software to manage a complex routing/mixing/splitting and control of my audio setup.

A brief view of what I do:
I process an analog input that gets processed by:
-several vsts ( NO vst instruments)
-3 hardware effects ( using the audio card as a send/return system)

I use midi just to control parameters, presets and values;
I don't use samples;
I use a vst looper ( Mobius).

I see that I can replicate my audio flow in Live and I see I can control it via the midi architecture it offers.

Premise:
I basically have a audio signal flow that is always made by the same elements, being them vst effects, audio channels, auxes. No new elements are inserted or substituted in my "playing space".
I just modify the parameters and play with the send/returns.

What I want to check if I can do:
I would like to use Live to take a "screenshot" of the parameters that my situation is showing at a specific moment to be able to recall it via midi.
Recalling it doesn't have to stop its audio engine; it can't be a a Live Set.
It must be something like loading a "scene" that allows audio signal to be always running.

This involves being able to recall:
vst presets ( with names, not just the parameters)
aux and levels values

and, possibly:
a module that allows me to set specific midi control or program changes to send out via midi to control external hardware.

There are some virtual rack applications that allow this and I am checking if Live does have this potential.
I know that a lot of its power is in the Max extension, at the moment I am not interested in checking if this will be possible via Max, just checking if Live can do it by itself.

Thank you a lot to those who will spend their time on this.
My best,
Luca

You can set Program Change #'s in Midi Clips, but make sure your vst's support PC changes. I've found a decent number of synths and effects don't support PC Recall.
Alternatively, I have a system of scrolling through PC's by using a combination of nativeKontrol's Macrobat and Clyphx.
So that's 2 options for PC messages. I've never sent PC's outboard but in theory you'd think it would work if the track output was right as well as Preferences.
As far as Recalling states, I use Clyphx for this, they're called snapshots. I'm not sure how the Max version "Kapture" is compared to Clyphx, but that's another alternative.

Sorry to not be so specific right now; in the office. But you can find where to set PC's in the midi clips, it may not be obvious at first. Then checkout nativeKontrol tweaks (like Macrobat and Clyphx, they are used as Remote Users scripts) Google Beatwise and that's the nativeKontrol forum.

WOW !
Thank you for these two amazing tools !

Kapture is for sure more intuitive and fast to use, it is exactly what I was dreaming about.
I still want to check one thing about it:
I see you can decide whether make it control just the audio settings "MIXER" and/or the "DEVICES".
While I have clear what the MIXER option is controlling, I have some doubts what the DEVICES is acting on.

Specifically I see that the vst parameters and presets are not recalled in either cases.
Is there something I am missing or maybe some mistake I am doing ?
I have installed Kapture in a midi track.

thanks,
Luca

ps
while I see that the link on this page: http://liine.net/en/products/kapture/
says "Download Kapture 2.0.0 Max for Live on Ableton.com"
the page it is linked to: http://www.ableton.com/pages/max_for_li ... -maximized
makes you download the v.1.0
which is the latest available release and where may I get it ?
