Can you switch Kontakt 4 instruments from Ableton Live?

Post by auron » Thu Dec 23, 2010 4:17 am

I'm running Ableton Live 8 suite with Kontakt 4 as a plugin. I have a MPD32

In Kontakt 4 you can switch to the next instrument in a group by clicking the right arrow icon next to the name of the selected instrument.
but it isn't clear that this icon can be mapped to a midi controller.

Is it possible to map a MPD32 midi controller button to select the next kontakt 4 instrument in a group?

The idea is to hit that button so I can continually change drumkits during live performance from the MPD.

This is all in Kontakt. Kontakt can change sound via program change messages. You set it up in Kontakt it's in the manual.
Once you do that it's on to figuring out how to get the MPD32 to send program change messages.

thanks. just to follow up for anyone else wanting to do the same:

in kontakt 4 under Files menu choose "Load New Instrument rack". When you hit the setup icon you will see an empty bank of 128 slots.
Load each instrument you want to switch, the numbers correspond to the MIDI program change message.

In Ableton 8 in session view you now create a MIDI clip in a track. For the clip, in the "notes" window you select the program change message.
Add a launch command as needed for whatever you are trying to do. So now as you play a scene and it gets to that clip, the clip will change your instrument for you. Or you can map a MIDI controller to the scene selector to switch your instruments.

using a MPD32 there is a "program change" button that allows you to change instruments in a Kontakt 4 bank directly without having to set up a chain selector.

so you can just load a kontakt VST into a track (without clips) and switch instruments using the MPD32's program change button and knob once you have loaded up your instrument bank in Kontakt.

In ableton I've set up a rack of multiple instruments in one track that can be selected with a chain selector. But each scene needs a clip in it, and the timeline has to be playing, etc.

is there another way to switch to the next/prev instrument in a pure ableton instrument rack without using a chain selector? so the track doesn't even have to have a clip in it or play the timeline?
