HexCore 970 or SandyBridge 2600K?

Post by WFWS » Wed May 04, 2011 4:04 pm

I finally get to upgrade my home studio DAW, and I'm not sure what works best with Live. I rewire to Reason alot, but Live Suite is my main DAW.

I decided on a 970 Hexcore with 6gb, with a water cooler for the CPU and six gb memory. I'd like to get three years out of it...
But then I started reading about SandyBridge 2600K, and overclocking. Even moderately overclocked, the reviewers say these chips don't generate dangerous heat, so they say you can overclock with a stock heatsink with relative safety. Also, the 4 core SandyBridge (when overclocked) can outperform a six core and generate less heat. Not to mention its almost $300 cheaper.
So, what is the deal- is SIX REAL CORES better than 4 (read 8 Hypethreaded) SandyBridge cores for Ableton Live?

I'm on a dual core laptop now, so this is all going to be a big improvement. But if Sandy Bridge is roughly equivalent to the HexCore in LIVE, I'd rather do that, and put the money into a Solid State hard drive as prices come down on these.
Live 8 Suite, i7 2600K 8gb, 500gb 7200 HD, Firepod, Keystation 88, TrapKat, FCB1010

X58 chipset is out from 2009 and most x58 motherboards dont suport sata 6gbps or usb3.
You have to know that an x58 chipset is an entusiast product for high end machines that comes with a premium price.
A today good x58 motherboard for low dpc latency (studio use) with sata3 and usb3 comes around 300-400 euro.
So you have to understand that you throw around 1500 euro (propably more) for a computer technology that its outdated by 3 years :P
It is a proven good technology but a little dated at this point of time ( i own an x58 - i7 920 - 6gigs ram since its launch).

sandybridge is ok but my self i would wait for 2 things.

1st are AMD bulldozers that are going to release in june (true 8 cores with double threads = 16cpu recognition in windows) a lot of people say that this will brind amd back to the throne, dunno we will see.
2ns is Ivy bridge by intel around the end of this year that is going to replace the x58 platform (and this i would consider a studio machine that will last at least 3-4 years as my current lasted).

Now if you need a pc today i would say take a 2600k with a proven quality motherboard with sata 6gbps/usb3.
And if you ask me why sata 6gbps? You have to touch a machine with an ssd as its main windows drive... and all current released ssd's are sata 6gbps.

Another thing to consider is if you buy now look for a machine with the uefi (new type of bios) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppRzv1tK ... ature=fvwp you said overcloacking right?

Sorry for my english as are not my native language.
I will be around if you have any other questions.
