I have use camel audio alchemy for doimng this kind of thing and even made it real time controllable via the mod wheel, so I can hold a vocal sound indefinately with the granular synthesis, then morph it back into the vocal phrase.
Melodyne is good for detail correction work - changing notes in loops, but I dont find it that great for major pitch/time changes and/or creative sonic abuse.
The cleanest I have found for major pitch/time changes is actually propellerheads record - but that dont have the flexibility you are probably looking for either.
I would go with a combination of alchemy and crossfading to/from the ableton complex pro when the alchemy sound is back in sync. If you dont want to spend any mroe money, embrass the fact that the sound is mangled and use the tone or texture wapr mode. I have use that quite a bit for vocal mangling, slowdowns fade to gains etc, but you cant actually grain loop with it wheras alchemy can.

With SoundHack you can use it's Phase Vocoding technique to create Paulstretch-like sounds. This (free) program has been around for years, and while a bit clumsy (no real-time processing, and a very shall we say 'workmanlike' GUI) it still produces some amazing sounds.
Some of Reaktor's ensembles (like Travelizer) lend themselves very good to more far-out stretching sounds too.

i've made some granular synth racks in Live using Sampler so if you have it, check them out.

Do you have a tutorial for this/could you explain it?I have use camel audio alchemy for doimng this kind of thing and even made it real time controllable via the mod wheel, so I can hold a vocal sound indefinately with the granular synthesis, then morph it back into the vocal phrase.
I was trying to do this the other day and the samples all sounded awful.

What about Logic Pro 9? Flex mode(s) sound(s) delicious. Prop's Record audio stretch possibilities are also worth recommendation....

I just made a template patch with some control into which I can drop a sample - pretty much anything works well - but female vocals especially work well.
Main thing is adjusting the grain control to get the result smooth enough, but still giving you precise enough timing, otherwise its pretty much a default alchemy patch using an osc set to granular sampler mode.
