Sending Click To BAnd Only
Sending Click To BAnd Only
I am sure this has been covered a million times but my key word searches did not bring up the answer I am looking for so even if you just want to post a link to another thread or a video I understand . .
I want to send the click out via one channel to headphones to the drummer and whomever else may want it in the band.
What is the simplest way? I will be opening new songs throughout the set.
I have a Focusrite Saffire Firewire that has 10 out so I am sure this is a matter of sending the click track to out 10.
How do I isolate and send the songs click out solo? Can I use the click button or do I need to create a separate click track in either session or performance review (whichever one I am using for the song)?
Thanks ahead of time and again apologies if you just went over this two days ago with someone. Didn't see the thread.

Re: Sending Click To BAnd Only
Easiest way, with the most options is to create a new track (midi or audio) and use whatever kind of sound you want. Some people use JUST a click, with a down on one. Others might use something more complex, as it'd be easier to follow and can reveal more information about the position of the song.
Re: Sending Click To BAnd Only
Exactly. Create your click track; don't use the onboard metronome. Then create a return track and assign its outputs to the desired outputs on your interface. Send the click and any other desired audio to the return track via the corresponding send knobs. This way, you have separate control over the headphone mix and main mix. You'll have to do this in each song but it's a one time thing. Once it's done, it's done. For new songs, you could create a template that already has this monitor setup.yur2die4 wrote:Easiest way, with the most options is to create a new track (midi or audio) and use whatever kind of sound you want. Re: Sending Click To BAnd Only
Excellent. A vid on youtube showed this. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something with the onboard metronome.
This is better than the onboard metronome as that click is enough to drive anyone insane.
The template is a fine solution. I take it (do not have Ableton open in fron of me) I could also feed another track into the beat track for audio cues.

Re: Sending Click To BAnd Only
You can feed anything into it. Just open up the send on any track you want in the headphones. I'm a drummer and I like hearing a bit of everything with the click upfront. Maybe bass more upfront too. I like using a cutting cowbell sound and sometimes an African percussion loop or programmed congas and shakers. Having those things in there makes it feel more organic to play with. If I'm using session view, I just make sure the click is in every scene so that no matter where the arrangement goes, the click is there. I also always have one scene with just click for a count-in. That way, the groove is in my head before anything starts.neyko wrote:Excellent. A vid on youtube showed this. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something with the onboard metronome.

Re: Sending Click To BAnd Only
adamg - and all you other fine ablenites
1. I have created a single track for the drummer. Track 1
2. I have all the A sends in the song going to A Return.
3. On track 1 I have Audio From set to A Return. Post FX
4. Monitor is set to "IN."
5. Audio Out to Ext 5 in which I have the headphones plugged into in the Focusrite Saffire.
This way the drummer is getting the full mix and the Sends can be adjusted to the drummers liking.
Also, the metronome is set to go only to Channel 1.
Does this sound like the correct way to do it?
Or is there an easier way?
Thanks.

1) On a return track (in your case A), assign its output to your interface output (in your case 5)
2) On a track (in your case 1), create a clip that contains some sort of click or percussion time-keeper. This could be an audio or midi clip.
3) Dial up send A on track 1 to send the click to the return track and out to your interface.
4) Dial up send A on all tracks that you want present in the headphones.

Re: Sending Click To BAnd Only
I think we are really close on what we are doing. See if the drummer prefers the click on track 1 or sent separately via audio to track 1.
Thank you for all your help folks. Show coming up soon I needed to know how to do this TODAY.
Cheers!

One more question
How do set Ableton so I can hear the click track if I need to under this set up?
Never mind - particular song froze - I see cue out on the Master. Yes?

Is the audio coming out of output 5 on your interface just going to one set of headphones? If so, just go get yourself a cheap headphone amp that will accomodate multiple 'phones. Presonus makes a cheap one that's fine and feeds four sets of 'phones.
I'm not sure about using the cue out under the setup I've recommended. Since track 1 is already routed to return A and out to the interface, I don't know if sending track 1 to the cue out will interrupt its flow to the drummer or not. Seems like it should work. You wouldn't think solo/cue would interrupt flow to the sends but I'd check to be sure. There's your next experiment.
I suppose you could set up another send/return and route THAT to the cue out.

Already done

I am using a blank track for the drummer (say track 1) and the click on another track (say 2) that is being sent directly to the drummer's track (#).
It works out well.
I just hope I don't have freezing issue which are just seeming to start - never ever had them before.
