i5 or i7?

Post by StinkyPat » Mon May 09, 2011 10:32 pm

Sorry to be a dork, but will I get a huge performance difference from an i5 processor to an i7 processor? I'm on PC. Will have about 8 GIG RAM and a 720 rpm HD. I thought maybe someone would chime in. Thanks for any replys.

Dual 6-core Xeon

Honestly, I don't buy into the bench marking hype and go by the real world results. For example, I had a dual cpu system with 2x 1.0 GHz Pentium 3 processors that out performed a single 2.4 GHz w/ hyper-threading Pentium 4 system.

That 'hyper-threading' crap they were selling a few years ago was such a scam. Total marketing ploy.

can't answer the question, but I have the bottom 13" i5 2.3 Macbook and I'm really impressed with the speed. Anything up from here is just a bonus IMO! 8)

I'm actually running an i3 Asus laptop and it has more power then my Quad 2.4ghz desktop. Both of which have plenty of power for my needs.

Keep in mind some of the satellites in space still work on a 8 hz processor. The problem is not I5 or I7. Its how you setup the things all together... buy a real sound card (Focusrite) and you save CPU, buy a real midi connector ( Midisport 4x4) and you save CPU. etc..... the problem ? The focusrite by itself is probably more expensive than the computer youre buying !!!!! be smart, if you're serious about the music, get music equipments, and dont ask your computer to save your $$$$$$$$

I'm in the market for an upgrade (currently Q8300 - 2.5Ghz Core2Quad with 4Gb of DDR2 800 RAM) and I will most likely go with the i5 2400 or 2500 and 4Gb of DDR3 1600 RAM.

I will continue to run XP.

It does not seem that I will need the i7. That CPU is a boss and I just don't think I need that extra processing power. At least not enough to spend an extra $100 for it.
