How to stop samples after triggering

Post by Pieterrr » Fri May 13, 2011 6:52 pm

hi -
i use live as my sampler when i do gigs. i have instrument racks on different tracks - and i throw my samples in them. i know how to trigger those. i also work with the "length"-midi plug when i have long samples. i just have to press my keyboard note once, and simpler plays the sample til the end... but is there a way to stop samples from playing?
f.e. it would be cool if a sample starts to play when i hit "C3" on a keyboard, and stops when i hit C3 (or another note) again. but i can't figure out how to do it. any help?
thanx!

simple.

Clip View, change the launch mode to Toggle.

check the manual, you'll discover many wonderous things about Live.

hi tone deft, thx for your reply!
i know about "toggle" - but that's only when i work with 'clips', right?
now i have instrument racks with simplers and everything. i don't see a toggle function there.

If you're using Simpler, the "Release" parameter controls how long it keeps playing when the triggering note stops. The "Length" parameter controls how long it will play even when the note is held (assuming that "Loop" is turned on).

Hello
Pieterr, did you find a way to do it?
I'm working with push and would like to be able to do just as you described: launch a sample (trigger mode) on a C and stop it when I want with C# for instance.
Anyone, any trick for that?

Hello I actually may have found a trick for those who still got an issue.

In a Drum Rack click on I-O bouton to see the chain of you rack.
Apply the same choke number to your long sample you want to be able to stop after triggering it, and another sample with a one shot.
Because the two samples are "choked" if you trigger one it stops the other. (you can use a muted sample and use it as a stop bouton)

If you want each sample to stop the other sample as you go, putting them all on the same choke number in drum rack works pretty well I reckon!

I was having this problem in the drum rack and I just figured it out I reckon.

You can set one sample to 'choke'/stop the preceding samples if you set the two samples to the same Choke number in the I-O extension when you are looking at the 16 sample slots and whatnot.

Additionally - if you want a sample to stop upon the release of the button, you must select the sample you want to behave like this and set it to 'Gate' as opposed to 'Trigger'. I found this useful for a succession of organ chords as many instruments like this will stop a note once a button/key is released unless a sustain pedal is pressed, whereas the drum rack (a multi-sample simpler basically) will not behave like this unless directed.

Hope that helps,

Thanks
