How do I transfer Live 8 to a new machine?

Post by WFWS » Tue May 17, 2011 12:41 am

Yep, I'm gloating. I got a nice new computer with Windows 7/64. I want to transfer my Live Suite 8.2 to the new machine, and then turn off authorization on my old machine.

Of course, I'd like to do this without loosing my presets, my custom stuff, my paks, etc. So how DO you do a clean move?

A follow up question, Mr. President. I'm moving from a core2 duo laptop to a desktop i7 SandyBridge with lotsa RAM. I'd like to know when Live will be able to use HyperThreading. More directly, do I need to turn it OFF now, and when can I turn it ON?

So, lets see how this ANSWER thingy works.

drop the old drive into the new computer, use it as a data drive. (good time to back it up)
install Live on the new computer. give Ableton a heads up ASAP that you'll be doing a new install. don't wait until Friday night to do that.
point the new install to your old Library and toonz and whatnot, done.

been doing this for years, occasionally copying whole drives to new larger drives then stowing the old drives away.

dunno about hyperthreading. I think you'll find that Live runs so smooth and fast on the new machine you won't bother with that stuff.

Thanks, TD. I spent a few minutes disagreeing. Its the principle of the thing. Can't I move to a new machine without loosing all my stuff, bla bla bla. But since I know that a new hard drive is only $60 or so, its totally NOT worth spending hours jacking around with it. I think I even have another hard drive to put in the laptop somewhere. Done.

Simple is good.
