Hardware Advice: AKAI MPD 24 or Launchpad + Korg nanoKONTROL

Post by Drausin » Fri May 27, 2011 5:58 pm

Hey everyone,

I'm completely new to Ableton. I'm going to be using it to make some music with my buddy (who's a guitarist) to do something kinda like 3OH!3 or Breathe Carolina. Essentially, the electronics will be mixing with guitar tracks and vocal tracks so they won't be the focal point of our music, but one of three primary instruments in the mix.

That being said, I'm not sure how many knobs, faders, and pads I'll need to produce our music and perform it live, and that's where I need your help. I was looking at this MPD 24 (http://www.audiolines.com/Recording/Com ... Akai-MPD24), which seems to be an all-in-one with 16 velocity-sensitive pads, 6 faders, and 8 knobs. However, are these enough external surfaces to produce/perform a good electronic element in a song?

My other option I've considered would be the 64 pad Launchpad (http://www.amazon.com/Novation-Launchpa ... roduct_top) and the nanoKONTROL (http://www.amazon.com/Korg-nanoKONTROL- ... roduct_top) for faders and sliders. It's slightly pricier, but it also gives me more surfaces and options.

Which setup do you think is better and more practical for my purposes? Do you have any other set-up suggestions? (I've looked at the APC20 and APC40 and I'm not too interested in either of those). THANK YOU!!

Go with the latter. Also, nanokontrol2 is out. I think it'd be worth the effort for the latest features.

The LP has light up buttons and is mapped automatically for your needs. Especially great for performances in the dark. Plus it has sooo many buttons. The korg alone is quite versatile.

The mpd is a bit dated, has wannabe endless rotary encoders (you get lost easily with what point they are set to), and the pads can be a bit rough. Plus you have to map everything yourself or d/l a somewhat limited script. You'll be stuck wanting more, which is why there would be more value in spending a litte extra in the first place.

Lastly, if you must have pads, you can eventually grab a nanopad2. The thing has a nifty x/y pad that has some crazy (kaossilatoresque) functions :). Best of luck!
